The Fotbollsallsvenskan 1939/40 was the 16th season of the highest Swedish football league . The season began on July 26, 1939 and ended on June 2, 1940.
Last year's champions IF Elfsborg were able to defend their title thanks to the better goal quotient against IFK Göteborg . The then Swedish record champions Örgryte IS ended the season on a relegation zone as well as promoted Hammarby IF and had to relegate to the second division for the first time.
