The football league 1962/63 was the last season of the leagues as the highest division in German football.

The Bundesliga was introduced in Germany for the 1963/64 season . 16 teams were able to qualify for the newly created league, five each from the Oberliga Süd and Oberliga West, three from the Oberliga Nord, two from the Oberliga Südwest and one club from the Berlin City League. Both sporting and economic criteria were decisive for the selection of the teams.

The upper league teams that could not qualify for the Bundesliga joined the newly created regional league from 1963/64 , which formed the foundation of the Bundesliga until 1974 and, like the upper leagues, was made up of five regional groups.

North

Season overview

This last season brought the decision as to who would represent the north alongside Hamburger SV and Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga : not least because of their third place, Braunschweiger Eintracht joined them at the last minute . After the early naming of HSV and Werder, only one club from Lower Saxony came into consideration. Hannover 96 and VfL Osnabrück as well as Holstein Kiel and FC St. Pauli were left behind. The last top scorer was Dieter Meyer from Bremen , who left Uwe Seeler five goals behind with 37 goals . At the end of this season, the record player of the Oberliga Nord also said goodbye: the center runner Otmar Sommerfeld had played 362 games (20 goals) since September 1949, first with Harburger TB , then eight years with FC St. Pauli and most recently four seasons for Bergedorf 85 . With VfR Neumünster , Holstein Kiel and VfB Lübeck , the state of Schleswig-Holstein was represented in the top German league for the last time to this day (as of 2020).

After Dieter Meyer and Uwe Seeler, Jürgen Moll (Eintracht Braunschweig) and Lothar Ulsaß (Arminia Hannover) followed in the top scorer list with 23 goals each . Udo Lattek (VfL Osnabrück), who later became very successful as a coach , led the players under 20 goals with 19 goals in front of Horst Haecks (FC St. Pauli) with 18 goals.

    Season overview

In the west , 1. FC Köln , Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 were earmarked for the new first division early on, and all clubs in the major league, with the exception of TSV Marl-Hüls , had applied for the two other places . Hüls finally came in last and made league history due to the 1:11 record defeat in Dortmund. The last top scorer was Jürgen Schütz (Dortmund, 25 goals) ahead of Christian Müller (1. FC Köln, 21). The Cologne Viktoria with coach Hennes Weisweiler was only eighth, but said goodbye with a real peat festival from the "upper house": the strongest attack in the league made it in front of their own audience u. a. Westfalia Herne 7: 2, Fortuna Düsseldorf 7: 3, Marl-Hüls 7: 0, Bayer Leverkusen 5: 0 and Schalke 6: 4 and also scored away goals on the assembly line (5: 2 in Leverkusen, 5: 3 in Hamborn , 4: 2 in Gladbach ).

Both representatives of the West in the final round of the German championship were able to advance into the final, in which Borussia defeated 1. FC Köln 3-1. In the end, Meidericher SV and Preußen Munster were accepted into the Bundesliga, which was particularly upset in Aachen. The Alemannia protest was rejected in autumn 1963.

    south

    Season overview

In the south , too , with 1. FC Nürnberg and Eintracht Frankfurt, two clubs were planned for the newly created Bundesliga before the start of the season . A heated battle broke out in the last season of the Oberliga Süd for the remaining three places due to the south in the new top German division. Finally, in addition to the champions TSV 1860 Munich, the Karlsruher SC and VfB Stuttgart qualified . The Offenbacher Kickers , who had achieved fifth place in the twelve-year ranking behind Karlsruhe and Stuttgart due to their constant performance in the Oberliga Süd, were left behind. Due to the small difference in points, the three clubs were classified as equivalent, so that the final table of the 1962/63 season was decisive. But here too, the Kickers from Offenbach landed behind Karlsruhe and Stuttgart. FC Bayern Munich , which lagged significantly behind in the twelve-year ranking, was also not included in the Bundesliga .

The record scorer in the last league season was Kurt Haseneder , who scored 25 of the 87 goals in Nuremberg in 23 games. It was followed by Rainer Ohlhauser from FC Bayern Munich with 24 and Heinz Strehl from Nuremberg with 15 goals.

    Berlin

    Season overview

With the decision to introduce the Bundesliga for the 1963/64 season, it was announced that the Berlin contract league should only get one starting place in the new Bundesliga. Three teams from Berlin competed for the starting place: Hertha BSC , SC Tasmania 1900 Berlin and BFC Viktoria 1889 . Ultimately, Hertha, who took first place in the contract league last season, won the bid, which led to violent protests, especially at Tasmania, which had become three times champion and twice runner-up in the last five years. Tas accused Hertha of falsifying accounts. Apart from the promoted Hertha BSC and the two relegated to the Berlin amateur league BFC Viktoria 1889 and SC Tegel , the remaining teams qualified for the newly created Regionalliga Berlin .

The list of goalscorers was headed by Hans-Joachim Altendorff (Hertha BSC) with 41 goals ahead of Erwin Bruske (Tasmania 1900) with 18 and Helmut Faeder (Hertha BSC) with 15 goals.
