In 10 matches between Hajduk Split, the away goals rule was the decisive factor for progress. Hajduk benefited from this arrangement four times and Hajduk was at a disadvantage six times.

Greatest successes
Hajduk Split achieved their greatest success in the European Cup Winners' Cup and in the UEFA Cup when they reached the semi-finals. In the Cup Winners' Cup in 1972/73 it was the last stop against Leeds United (0-1 and 0-0) and in the 1983/84 UEFA Cup Hajduk failed (after a 2-1 home win and a 0-1 away defeat) due to the away goals rule against eventual tournament winner Tottenham Hotspur .
The greatest successes in the “ King's Competition ”, the former European Cup and today's Champions League, were three quarter-finals in 1975/76 , 1979/80 and 1994/95 . In 1976 Hajduk failed after a 2-0 home win 3-0 after extra time against PSV Eindhoven , in 1980 against Hamburger SV due to the away goals rule (0-1 and 3-2) and in 1995 after surviving the group stage of the Champions League against the later tournament winner Ajax Amsterdam (0-0 and 0-3), who prevailed in the semifinals against FC Bayern Munich (0-0 and 5-2) and in the final against AC Milan (1-0).
Catchbacks
In the second round of the 1974/75 European Cup , Hajduk failed after a 4-1 home win against AS Saint-Étienne . In the second leg played on November 5, 1974, Jean-Michel Larqué gave the hosts the lead in the 36th minute. Mićun Jovanić managed to equalize in the 60th minute to make it 1-1, but after Dominique Bathenay scored another opening goal for the hosts just one minute later and Georges Bereta scored the 3-1 with a penalty in the 72nd minute Yves Trientafilos with his goals to 4: 1 (82nd minute) and the 5: 1 in overtime (104th minute) for the turn in favor of the French.
Hajduk experienced a similar setback eight years later in the second round of the 1982/83 UEFA Cup against Girondins Bordeaux . This time too, Hajduk had won his home game 4-1 before they were eliminated again in France. In the second leg played on November 3, 1982, Gernot Rohr put the home team in the lead in the 24th minute, before two goals from Alain Giresse and the goal of 3-0 lead by Jean-Christophe Thouvenel for a 4-0 win for the hosts cared.
A year earlier, Hajduk failed to make a spectacular comeback in the third round of the 1981/82 UEFA Cup . After a 1: 5 defeat at FC Valencia Hajduk led in on December 9, 1981 discharged home game, although already after 21 minutes with 2: 0, heading in the same season to Yugoslavia Footballer of the Year selected Ivan Gudelj total of three hits on the four gates his team; but because Enrique Saura had scored a goal for the Spaniards in the 52nd minute (at 2-1), the 4-1 home win was not enough to advance.
Even a good 30 years later, Hajduk barely missed a sensation. After losing their home game in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League 2012/13 against Inter Milan 3-0, they won the second leg played on August 9, 2012 at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium with goals from Ante Vukušić from a penalty kick in the 23rd minute and Ivan Vuković in the 58th minute with 2-0.
While Hajduk could not punish Inter's negligence, 7 years later Hajduk's carelessness was bitterly punished. After a 2-0 win at Maltese representative Gżira United and an early 1-0 lead in front of their own audience on July 18, 2019, Hajduk gave the already believed advance in the first qualifying round of the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League with goals from Jefferson Mateus de Assis Estacio (57th minute) and a brace by Hamed Koné (69th minute and 90th + 7th minute) still out of hand and failed for the sixth time in his European history against the away goal rule.
