European handball championship 2008 / qualification

This page describes the qualification for the 8th Men's Handball European Championship 2008 . 32 nations were involved in the qualification, of which 9 teams qualified for the finals in Norway . In addition to the Norwegian men's national handball team , as the organizer, the six best teams in the 2006 European Championship , defending champions France as well as Spain , Denmark , Croatia , Germany and Russia were directly qualified.

qualification

32 teams took part in the qualification. These had to compete in seven groups - five groups of four teams each and two groups of three teams each. The group winners and the runners-up of the groups with four teams were eligible to start in the play-off round, where a further six teams set for the play-off games were added.

Play-off round

In addition to the group winners and runners-up in the qualification, there were six teams based on the ranking list. These were Iceland, Poland, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Hungary. These determined the remaining nine participants for the 2006 finals in the knockout system. The draw resulted in the following pairings:
