history
Many tribes lived on the southern edge of the Veluwe, on the Rhine, even in prehistory. Wolfheze and Oosterbeek were also settled at the time of Charlemagne . Renkum was first mentioned in a document in 970. Doorwerth Castle was built around 1280 on the site of a building that was destroyed around 1260. It was on an island in the Rhine, and the owner collected a toll from the captains of passing ships.
Around 1392 the very important, now defunct Mariënwaard monastery was founded in Oosterbeek. During the Eighty Years War , Wolfheze was destroyed by the Spanish; a new village was not created until 1846 when a station on the Arnhem – Ede railway was built for forestry . In 1906 a large Christian psychiatric clinic was added. Paper- making flourished here in the 17th and 18th centuries as there were clear, clean streams and water mills. In 1916 the rubber factory Hevea, now part of the Vredestein works, had the village of Heveadorp built especially for its workforce. Many of the old houses with their thatched roofs are still standing; they were restored after a period of decay around 1980.
The most decisive epoch in Renkum's history, however, was the Second World War, and in particular Operation Market Garden or “Battle of Arnhem”. On September 17, 1944, Allied paratroopers landed on the Renkumer Heide and north of Wolfheze and advanced to Oosterbeek, where their leader, General Urquhart , took the Hartenstein manor as their headquarters . The bloody battle that ended with the Germans recapturing the bridgehead led to the almost complete destruction of Oosterbeek. The other places in the community also suffered severe war damage. The discovery of explosive devices from the Second World War can still be expected during construction and road works.
After 1945 a rapid restoration and a successful reconstruction began. The promotion of industry and tourism brought a lot of economic growth.
In 1954, Oosterbeek was the first venue for a Bilderberg conference .
