NGC 823 = IC 1782 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Fornax in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 196 million light years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years in diameter.

The object was discovered on October 14, 1830 by the astronomer John Herschel .
