Life
Jim Risch's ancestors on his father's side immigrated from Hanover to the United States in the 20th century . He studied from 1961 to 1963 at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and then at the University of Idaho in Moscow , where he in 1965 as Bachelor graduated and in 1968 at the law school as a Juris Doctor doctorate. From 1970 to 1974 he served as a prosecutor in Ada County , Idaho.
Risch was elected to the Idaho Senate in 1976 , where he later served as Chairman of the Republican Faction and President of the Senate. In 1988 he surprisingly failed in re-election to the Democratic candidate F. Michael Burkett .
In 1994 he lost the Republican Party's primary elections to the State Senate. In November 2002, he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Idaho. When Governor Dirk Kempthorne resigned to become Secretary of the Interior of the United States , Risch took over the office of Governor of Idaho on May 26, 2006. He waived re-election in 2006, was nominated again as a candidate for the office of Vice-Governor and was also elected in November 2006. As of January 1, 2007, he was the deputy of his successor in the governorship, Butch Otter .
In November 2008, Risch applied to succeed Larry Craig, who was no longer running, in the US Senate. After his victory in the Republican primary, he then also clearly prevailed against the Democratic candidate Larry LaRocco . Risch received 58 percent of the vote, LaRocco 34 percent. He took his seat in Congress on January 6, 2009. Among other things, he is chairman of the committee for medium-sized companies and a member of the ethics committee .
