The men's decathlon at the European Athletics Championships in 1962 was held on September 13 and 14, 1962 in Belgrade's Partizan Stadium .
In this competition there were two medals for Germany with silver and bronze. For the third time in a row, Vassili Kuznetsov was the third Olympic champion in 1956 and 1960 . He won ahead of the two German athletes Werner von Moltke and Manfred Bock .

Record improvement
European champion Vasily Kuznetsov improved the championship record according to the then valid rating from 1952 to 8026 P - according to the point system valid today from 1985: 7653 P.
execution
The decathlon was carried out according to the same rules as today. The ten disciplines took place over two days.
- Day 1: September 13th - 100 m / long jump / shot put / high jump / 400 m
- Day 2: September 14th - 110 m hurdles / discus throw / pole vault / javelin throw / 1500 m
As at the last European Championships, the points table of 1952 was used to score.

values : For orientation and classification of the performance, the points achieved in 1985 according to the current evaluation system are also listed.
The placements would have been shifted from twelve to fourteen:
- Franco Saar as thirteenth and the fourteenth Léopold Marien would each have moved up one rank.
- German Klimow in twelfth would have moved two places down.
Of course, these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.

After finishing sixth at the European Championships in 1958 , Eef Kamerbeek was fourth here in Belgrade
Willi Holdorf reached fifth place - in 1964 he became Olympic champion
