Leipzig buildings on German postage stamps

Old Town Hall ( SBZ / West Saxony , Bl. 5)

Leipzig buildings on German postage stamps can be found on special stamps again and again since they were first issued in 1940 on the occasion of the Leipzig Spring Fair due to the then traditional fair issues of Deutsche Post during the GDR era . The most common motif is the old town hall , which was rebuilt by Hieronymus Lotter in 1556/57. The exhibition halls in the city center and the old trade fair (technical fair) also found their way into the brand image as motifs. After the numerous trade fair issues of the GDR Post up to 1990, there have only been a few issues with Leipzig buildings since German reunification , including a. those on the anniversaries of Leipzig University , the erection of the Monument to the Battle of the Nations and the peaceful revolution of 1989 . This list contains all motifs issued officially or on an official basis. Block issues with the same motif or blocks with values ​​that depict other motifs, as well as postal stationery were not described.

Worth mentioning

The trade fair stamps planned for the autumn fair 1990 should appear as a block with two special stamps of 50 and 85 pfennigs. A large number of historical and contemporary buildings in the trade fair city would have been depicted in the edge of the block. Due to the reunification, the values ​​were no longer available.

Excursus: Leipzig buildings on German commemorative coins

Since the founding of the German Empire in 1871, some coins with images of Leipzig buildings have been issued. For the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Nations in 1913 was Saxony a commemorative coin in silver to 3  Mark embossed with the image of Voelkerschlachtdenkmal.
