St. George Church | 1072 | cath. | Downtown | Georgenstrasse 16 ( location ) |
active | After the approval of the Augustinian canons in 1135, the foundation stone was laid for a new, enlarged church in Romanesque style, which the bishop inaugurated on October 28, 1143. Bishop Hartwig raised St. George to a parish church with a delimited parish in 1183 , the Pope Celestine III. 1197 confirmed. A smaller Michael's chapel was added to the west side of the church in 1293. In 1490 the Georgskirche was extended and enlarged in the late Gothic style and consecrated in 1501. In 1527 Protestants used the chapels south of the church as a place of worship. The Reformation could not convince the canons, they remained true to their faith, but had to leave the city in 1537 and went to their Guggenberg Castle near Klimmach . They lost their library and art treasures in the iconoclasm of the Reformation, but were able to return after the Schmalkaldic War in 1548. Almost a hundred years later, in 1633, they had to flee again because they refused to swear allegiance to the Swedish King Gustav Adolf in 1632. They fled to Weilheim in Upper Bavaria and returned to their heavily devastated monastery in 1635. In 1665 the provost house, which burned down on December 13, 1660, was rebuilt. After the steeple of the church had been demolished in 1681, octagonal masonry with a copper-covered onion dome was added . In 1692 the rood screen between the choir and nave was torn down and a music gallery was built. In the following year, Provost Ilsung received the right to wear a miter and crook like a bishop ( pontificals ). City architect Hans Georg Mozart (great-uncle of Leopold Mozart ) completed the new building plans for the provost house in 1700, which was completed in 1705 with the renovation of the convent house and aligning it with the provost house. A Rococo altar frames the late Gothic cross and the Pietà in 1778 . In the course of secularization in Bavaria , the monastery became the property of the city in 1802. In 1809 the monastery building was used as a hospital during the Fifth Coalition War . The first pastor of St. George was appointed in 1810. In 1857 a new rectory on the south side of the church was completed, into which pastors and chaplains moved. The church was given a neo-Gothic interior in 1881, and two years later the hospital moved to a new building. The monastery building was acquired by a church foundation in 1901. In 1927 the chapels, which had previously been separated by walls, were included in the church interior during a renovation, which increased the area of the church. The church, badly damaged by air raids in 1944, and the burnt-out tower were makeshift repairs in 1945. From 1953 to 1956 the interior of the church was repaired, the neo-Gothic furnishings removed, the sacristy relocated to the south side and a confessional chapel built. A war memorial was also set up and a new parsonage was built. Ultimately, the brotherhood altar was restored and used as the main altar. In 1959 the confessional chapel and baptistery were established and a mosaic way of the cross was built. In 1961 the tower received its onion dome again and four new bells. In the course of the liturgical reform on the occasion of the Second Vatican Council , the choir was redesigned in 1968. In 1974 the church received a gallery organ, and in 1978 the outer facade of the high choir was renovated. The last work was carried out in 1980 with the external repair of the church tower and the redesign of the churchyard and in 1981 with the completion of the repair of the parish church. |
