List of the most visited cities

The following lists sort the 100 most visited cities in the world according to the number of foreign visitors at the last determinable time. Any international arrival by land, sea or plane for tourist or business purposes counts as a foreign visitor. Since the two sources of the consultants Euromonitor and the company Mastercard each define the term foreign visitor differently, their respective rankings differ. In addition, the lists can be based on different source data.

In 2018, Hong Kong was the most visited city with a total of 29.3 million visitors if all foreign people are counted who have spent at least 24 hours there. Bangkok , on the other hand, took first place if only people are counted who have stayed there at least once. In 2016 that was 21.5 million people. In the Euromonitor ranking there are a total of 3 German cities ( Berlin , Munich and Frankfurt am Main ) and in that of Mastercard there are a total of 5 (Munich, Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, Düsseldorf and Hamburg ).

List of the 100 most visited cities in the world in 2018 according to the Top 100 City Destinations Ranking. To count as a visitor to a city, a person must have been in that city for at least 24 hours. The growth in international arrivals compared to the previous year is also given.

Top 100 according to Mastercard (as of 2016)

List of 100 most visited cities in the world in 2016 according to the Mastercard Global Destinations Cities Index. In order to be counted as a visitor, a person must have stayed at least once in the respective city. The expenses of visitors to the respective city are also given. For cities that border directly on foreign territory, land border crossings are not counted as international visitors (e.g. between Singapore and neighboring Malaysia).
