(2016)

MTV Unplugged: Under steam - Without electricity , the eighth is a live album and the seventh video album of the German pop-rock - band Unholy .

Creation and artwork

With the exception of one piece, all the songs on the album were written by the Count. Many of the songs were written in collaboration with keyboard player Hennig Verlage, some with Markus Tombülle and a few works with other external composers. The album was arranged and produced by Michael Endersby, Philip Niessen and Lillo Scrimali. The mixing was carried out by Olsen Involtini . The album was mastered by Truebusyness Berlin, under the direction of Sascha Bühren. The album was released under the music label Vertigo Berlin and distributed by Universal Music Publishing . The concert recordings took place from October 3rd to 5th, 2015 in the Studio Hamburg Atelier 9/10 in Hamburg . This was an official acoustic concert of the MTV Unplugged series.

The film recordings for the video album were made by Markus Gerwinat, who had previously directed various Unheilig music videos . The video album was produced by Mark Entzelmann.

On the cover of the regular album - in addition to the artist name and album title - a comic representation of a machine telegraph can be seen. On the cover of the limited box set - in addition to the artist name and album title - you can see a comic representation of an old steam locomotive in motion. Images of the same kind were already found on the previous studio album Gipfelstürmer as well as on the corresponding live album Gipfelstürmer Live and the single releases Time to Go , My Mountain , Glück auf das Leben and Life is My Religion Again. The steam locomotive symbolizes Unheilig's last journey before the band retires. The photographs in the booklet come from Stefan Malzkorn. The artwork and the illustrations of the cover and the booklet come from the Dirk Rudolph office . The cover pictures were presented for the first time on October 16 and November 10, 2015.

Publication and promotion

The first release of MTV Unplugged: Unter Dampf - Ohne Strom took place on December 11, 2015 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The album is available as CD and download as well as a video album in Blu-Ray and DVD formats. The regular album consists of 13 tracks and includes live versions of songs from almost all of Unheilig's studio albums (except for Das 2. Gebot ). The “Deluxe Edition”, like the Blu-Ray and DVD, consists of two CDs with a total of 22 titles. In addition, a limited box set was released that includes two CDs, two DVDs and a Blu-Ray. A limited set consisting of three 12 "vinyl plates with all 22 titles was also released.

In order to promote the album, MTV Unplugged: Unter Dampf - Ohne Strom broadcast a short version of the Unplugged concert on MTV HD , Sat.1 and VIVA Germany during the week of its release . One day before the release, Unheilig's MTV Unplugged celebrated its pre-premiere in selected cinemas in Germany. Before the album was released, the singles Eisenmann (November 13, 2015) and Mein Stern were released.

content

All lyrics are completely in German, only the piece Sage Ja! contains one line in English. Musically, the songs move in the field of pop-rock . The album consists of 20 previously released and two previously unreleased tracks and includes a kind of "best of" by Unheilig. One of the new songs is about one in a million , this song was written while working on Gipfelstürmer , but didn't make it on the album at the time. The piece would be published here for the first time on an Unheilig sound carrier, as a studio version the song made it onto the subsequent studio album Von Mensch zu Mensch . The second newly recorded song is a cover version of the Hildegard Knef song For me it should rain red roses .

During the concert, Unheilig were accompanied by a large orchestra conducted by Adrian Werum. In five of the songs, the count was supported by the guest singers Alea the Modest , Helene Fischer , Thomas Lindner and Cassandra Steen , in addition to the choir that can always be heard in the background .

In addition to the concert, the video albums contain an additional recording of the dress rehearsal as well as a "behind-the- scenes " special.

In the making-of of this MTV Unplugged, the count described the selection of the setlist with the following words:

“In the run-up we made extreme thoughts about which songs we would play and it was also very clear that we didn't just want to play the songs that we usually play. There are songs from the first years that we haven't played often, or we played them on the first tours, that was ten years ago and it was important to us that we now play these songs again a little bit Bringing memories and for this MTV Unplugged also lifting something in a different light. "

reception

Reviews

The German-language online magazine laut.de only awarded one of five stars and had the following words for the album, among other things: “Between anemic Lindemann whispering ( freedom , say yes! ) And languishing pathos red ( astronaut , heart made of ice , on yours Pendulum ), the unholy front man slams one nail after the other into his rotten retrospective coffin, until the last handkerchief fills with snot and tear fluid. […] Alea from Saltatio Mortis and Schandmaul singer Thomas Linder are the first to join the protagonist on stage. Both are loyal to the Eisenmann and breathe at least a little life into the Lights of the City song, which is underlined with voluminous fanfare . [...] Cassandra Steen, on the other hand, rather mimes the Grim Reaper's sister. Come to drag the two helplessly paddling outpourings Golden Times and Born to Live, paddling helplessly in pathos jelly, into the dark depths with the help of wailing Catterfeld phrases. But it can get worse. Helene Fischer makes it possible. As expected, the incarnate blonde lie with the license to be omnipresent makes the hit cap on it. Either swaying ( time travel ) or surrounded by dripping melancholy ( just like you were ), the singer can be carried on the shoulders of the count in sound worlds in which Romina and Albano Power , Cindy and Bert and Gitte and Rex Gildo once lay in each other's arms . "

A sobering rating, with 1/10 points, was given by Plattentests.de . Among other things, they came to the following conclusion: "Unholy sound without electricity so so schmalztriefend that each village Goth with EMP-subscription of Kajal runs from the face. [...] Essentially, Unheilig swap the muffled sound of their studio albums for a winter fairy tale orchestration, which you get in front of Carmen Nebel and Florian Silbereisen on Saturday evenings . [...] Unholy sound like a lousy parody , as not meant very seriously. [...] Every single song sounds like a bad collection of dumb calendar wisdom. Sentimental things are lined up after weeping things, but in between times the count can happily stumble across meadows of flowers, hand in hand with Everybody's Helene, his tough colleague. [...] Later, towards the end of this album - if you are already completely crumbling - the Count knocks out another one: His cover of the Hildegard Knef classic For me it should rain red roses is perhaps the only halfway bearable moment of this hour and a half torture. The rest remains anatomically incorrect: a root canal treatment for the ears. "
