The Bilstein nature reserve with a size of 24.8 hectares is located northwest of Hoppecke in the urban area of Brilon . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2001 with the Hoppecketal landscape plan . The NSG belongs to the FFH area of the Diemel and Hoppecke water system (DE 4617-302).
Area description
The NSG is the beech forest on the southern flank of the Bilstein mountain . There are numerous small diabase rocks in the NSG . The rocks have a vegetation rich in moss and herbs. To the west of the NSG there is a large diabass quarry.
Protection purpose
The beech forest is to protect in the NSG. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
