  • The members of the United Nations are unofficially divided into five geopolitical groups. This division has evolved over the years in order to achieve a geographical and political balance. For many bodies that are elected, e.g. B. the UN Human Rights Council , a key is established which allocates a number of seats to the regions.

Group of Western European and other States / WEOG, 29 states

The group of Western European and other states comprises 28 countries. They are located in Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania.

    Members

1 In May 2000, Israel became a full member of WEOG for political reasons. This membership was limited in time, but with an option to renew. This membership has been renewed continuously since 2004. See also Israel's Foreign Policy

2 Turkey takes part in meetings of both the WEOG and the Asian countries. However, Turkey is only entitled to vote at WEOG.

3 The USA does not officially belong to any group. However, they take part as guest auditors at WEOG meetings and are also counted in this group when making voting decisions.

    No members

The history of the group of Western European and other states was characterized by a reluctance to engage in political cooperation until the 1970s.

    Discussion about Oceania

It is discussed whether a sixth group should not be introduced. In the decades since the UN was founded, many island states in the oceanic region have become independent and are now members of the UN. Since they are all in a group with the Asian states, many oceanic states do not feel sufficiently represented with their specific problems.
