Ribeaucourt is a French commune with 72 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meuse département in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ); it belongs to the arrondissement Bar-le-Duc and the municipality of Portes de Meuse . The municipality was part of the canton of Montiers-sur-Saulx until 2015 . The residents call themselves Ribeaucourtois / Ribeaucourtoises .

geography

Ribeaucourt is located around 29 kilometers southeast of the small town of Bar-le-Duc in the south of the Meuse department. The place is on the Orge. In contrast to many municipalities in the region, only small parts of the municipality are forested (Bois de la Reculée).

Neighboring municipalities are Biencourt-sur-Orge in the north-west and north, Saint-Joire in the north-east, Bonnet in the east, Mandres-en-Barrois in the south-east, Bure in the south and Montiers-sur-Saulx in the west and north-west.

history

Like all parishes in the area, the parish suffered from conflict in the Middle Ages. The worst devastation was caused by the Hundred Years War and the Thirty Years War . The name of today's municipality was first mentioned in a document in 1106 under the Latin name Robaldi-curtis . In the Middle Ages, the community belonged to the Barrois mouvant and was part of the Champagne . It was subordinate to the Kastlanei Bassigny in the Bailliage Chaumont. Ribeaucourt belonged to the Gondrecourt district from 1793 to 1801. From 1793 to 2015 Ribeaucourt was part of the canton of Montiers-sur-Saulx . The parish has been assigned to the Bar-le-Duc arrondissement since 1801.

Population development

In the first half of the 19th century the community always had more than 400 inhabitants. Because of its remoteness, the rural exodus was pronounced, as in many small communities in France. The population has shrunk by 83 percent from its peak in 1831 to the present day. After a brief growth phase between 1999 and 2011, there has been another decline in recent years.
