The sports club Röchling Völklingen 06 , or SV Röchling Völklingen for short or just Röchling Völklingen , also Röchling , is a sports club from Völklingen in the Saarland . It was founded on April 12, 1906. The club colors are black and red. The club's venue is the Hermann Neuberger Stadium . The club is currently playing in the five-class Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz / Saar , after having been relegated in the 2017/2018 season after being promoted to the Regionalliga-Südwest .

The SV Röchling Völklingen became known through its membership in the second division in the 1970s and twice participating in the promotion round to the Bundesliga . Between 1963 and 1977 as well as in the 1979/80 season, the Völklingen were in the second highest class for a total of 15 years.

history

The club was founded on March 24, 1919 under the name VfB Völklingen (from August 1919 SV Völklingen 06 ) as the successor to FC Völklingen 06, which was formed on April 26, 1906, was also named SV Völklingen 06 in 1912 and was dissolved in 1916 after being excluded from the association . In 1945, like all German clubs, the club had to be dissolved again, but was immediately re-established as a game and sports community Völklingen . As early as 1951, the club was given the old name SV 06 back for the second time . On May 9, 1966, the club took over the name of the Röchling steel dynasty , whose Völklinger Hütte was the city's largest employer and sponsor of SV 06.

After the Second World War

The Völklingers only played a supraregional role in the post-war period . After a very unsuccessful year in the Oberliga Südwest 1947/48, three years in the independent Saarlandliga and eight more years in the middle of the table in the third-class amateur league Saarland, the Völklinger were promoted to the 2nd Division Southwest in 1961 after the second championship in a row and qualified in 1963 for the newly founded Regionalliga Südwest .

The Völklinger belonged to this second highest German division until they were recruited in favor of the 2nd Bundesliga in the summer of 1974. In 1972 and 1973 they took part in the promotion round to the Bundesliga as Southwest runner-up , but failed both times: In 1972 the Saarlanders had to win against Offenbacher Kickers , Rot-Weiss Essen , FC St. Pauli and Wacker 04 Berlin , against which the only victory succeeded in the ascent round to give way. In 1973 they finished third in their group behind Rot-Weiss Essen and SV Darmstadt 98 and ahead of VfL Osnabrück and Wacker 04 Berlin.

2nd Bundesliga

In 1974 the Völklingen were founding members of the 2nd Bundesliga. After three years, when they were sixth in the table, they voluntarily withdrew to the Saarland Amateur League. In 1979 they rose again to the 2nd division, but only stayed a year.

1981 to 2012

In 1982 the Völklinger fell into the fourth class. 1983/84 they played another year in the amateur league, then only again in the 2002/03 season , at the end of which they were relegated again. For the next seven years, the Völklinger played in the sixth class Saarland League . After two second places (2006 and 2010), they won the Saarland League championship title with 21 points ahead of runner-up SC Halberg Brebach and thus rose to the Oberliga Südwest (since 2011/12 Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz / Saar ).

Since 2012

Röchling Völklingen held the class in the Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz / Saar 2013/14 season . In the 2016/17 season they were runner-up and qualified for the promotion round to the Regionalliga Südwest against FSV 08 Bissingen and Rot-Weiss Frankfurt . As the winner of the promotion round, Röchling Völklingen rose to the Regionalliga Südwest 2017/18 . After only one year of the regional league, which the club itself called an "adventure", Röchling Völklingen was immediately relegated from bottom of the table.

One of the greatest successes in the club's history was reaching the DFB Cup quarter -finals in the 1975/76 season , which the Saarlanders lost 2-1 at Hertha BSC after extra time.
