history
Saint-Apollinaire was founded as Aqualiacus in Gallo-Roman times . Aqualiacus is derived from the Latin expression aqua locus and means "place of water". The name suggests that there were many local sources.
Clotilde (465-545) had a small church built in Saint-Apollinaire around 500. The church was dedicated to St. Apollinaris of Ravenna . The city itself was not then called Saint-Apollinaire. It seems as if the church was built instead of a pagan temple, because the springs were already considered miraculous in pagan times. The pagan rites were Christianized by the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Bénigne by invoking Apollinaris of Ravenna while the sick took ritual baths. Between 1000 and 1028 the monks wrote the "Book of Miracles of Saint Apollinaris" ( livre des Miracles de Saint-Apollinaire ) to underpin the Christian claim to the sources.
In the 14th century the place was called Saint Apoloner or Saint Espoloney . In the 19th century, the local dialect was called Saint Epleuney and the residents were called Epleumiens . During the French Revolution , the place was renamed Fontaine Soyer because saints were not wanted in place names.
