The Scottish League Cup 1972/73 . The Scottish Football League Cup, which was played among the participants of the Scottish Football League , began on August 12, 1972 and ended with the final on December 9, 1972 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . Partick Thistle starts as defending champion in the competition that prevailed against Celtic Glasgow in the previous year's final . In this year's final, the Hibernian Edinburgh and Celtic Glasgow met again . For the Hibs it was the third final in the League Cup after 1951 and 1969 . Celtic reached the tenth consecutive League Cup final since 1965 , and the 12th overall since 1957 . This year's final won the Hibs 2-1 with goals from Pat Stanton and Jimmy O'Rourke , and a goal from Celtic player Kenny Dalglish . The Hibs won the League Cup in Scotland for the first time after two final defeats against FC Motherwell (1951) and Celtic Glasgow (1969). It was also the first trophy to be won in twenty years when the Scottish Championship was won in 1952 . The Bhoys from Glasgow lost the League Cup final for the third time in a row. In the 1972/73 season, the defeated Bhoys won the Scottish Championship in Green . In the cup final , the Glasgow Rangers defeated Celtic at the Old Firm 3-2. Celtic took part as champions in the following season in the European Cup and was eliminated in the semifinals against the Spanish champions Atlético Madrid . League cup winner Hibernian took part in the UEFA Cup and was eliminated in the second round against Leeds United .
