Singh ( Panjabi : ਸਿੰਘ Siṃgh [ sɪŋɡʱ ], Hindi : सिंह Siṃh ) is a common Indian surname . It comes from the Sanskrit word siṃha , which means "lion".

Origin and meaning

The name is used in particular by members of the Sikhs' religious community as a surname. It is worn by all male Sikhs and is intended to express the solidarity and equality in the Sikhist community. The name Singh was made mandatory for Sikhs by Guru Gobind Singh . Female Sikhs have the surname Kaur . In Europe and worldwide, due to the legal naming regulations of the respective countries, female Sikhs also have the surname Singh.

Apart from Sikhs, the name "Singh" is also used by members of different Hindu - box worn in northern India, especially Rajputs , but for example also by the Meitei in Northeast India Manipur . A variant that is particularly widespread in the state of Bihar is Sinha . Also related is the name component -singha or -singhe, which is often found in Sinhala names in Sri Lanka (e.g. Wickramasinghe ).
