St. Francis is a town in Aroostook County in the state of Maine in the United States . It is located near the Canadian border on the Saint John River . In 2010, 485 people lived there in 316 households on an area of 78.8 km².

Geographical location
St. Francis is located in the north of the US state Maine, near the Canadian border and almost 325 km north of the capital of the state of Augusta . The border with Canada runs through the Saint Johns River, on the south bank of which is the area of the town of St. Francis. There are several smaller lakes in the area, such as Bran Lake and McLean Lake . The surface is hilly, the highest point is the 598 m high McLean Mountain . It is located in the south of the town.

history
St. Francis was organized as a plantation on May 29, 1875, the town was founded on March 1, 1967. Originally, the area was named Township No. 17, Ninth Range West of the Easterly Line of the State (T17 R9 WELS).
The area was first settled in the 18th century by French-speaking Acadians fleeing the British and by French-speaking Canadians. English-speaking residents from the south of Maine also settled here later. Even today, 61.0% of the residents are French-speaking.

traffic
The Maine State Route 161 , whose end point is the neighboring Town Allagash, runs along the Saint John River by St. Francis. To the east it connects St. Francis with Fort Fairfield . Furthermore, there is a railroad connection in the village via which one can reach the nearest larger towns Fort Kent and Madawaska . The nearest airport with scheduled flights is in Presque Isle .
Public facilities
There is no public library in St. Francis, the closest being the Faye O'Leary Hafford Library in Allagash. There is a fire department in the town , the St. Francis Fire Department .
St. Francis does not have its own hospital. The closest is Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent.
