history

In Celtic times in a strategically favorable location at the junction of the routes over the Montgenèvre and Mont Cenis passes in the 1st century BC. Founded in BC, Susa was the main settlement of the tribe, whose ruler Donnus granted the Romans contractual rights that favored the Romanization of this part of Gallia Cisalpina . His son Cottius became the first prefect of Segusio and in 9/8 BC in honor of Emperor Augustus . To build the Arch of Augustus . His successors expanded the place and built the amphitheater, aqueduct and city fortifications in the 3rd century. Because of taking sides with Maxentius , Susa was destroyed by his rival Konstantin in 312.

Susa remained an important place on the transalpine routes, but only gained importance again with Adelheid von Susa . The daughter of the Marquis of Turin married Odone , Conte di Savoia, son of Umberto of Savoy , in the third marriage in 1035 , thus establishing a dynasty that still exists today and provided the Italian kings until 1946 . Adelheid von Susa also initiated the founding of the Church of San Giusto in 1027 (elevation to cathedral 1772).

When the Dauphiné , to which the upper Susa valley also belonged, passed to France in 1349 , the border ran just a few kilometers west of Susa through the middle of the valley. With the Peace of Utrecht in 1713 at the end of the War of the Spanish Succession , when France lost all possessions on the other side of the Alps , the valleys in which an attack by the French was to be expected were secured with enormous fortifications. The particularly endangered Susa Valley received two fortresses: Exilles was expanded, and Ignazio Bertola built the Brunetta fortress on a rock in Susa . In 1796 it was captured by Napoleonic troops and completely destroyed.

The Roman Catholic diocese of Susa , founded in 1772, has its seat in the city.
