Thomas Springer (born November 6, 1984 in Halle (Saale) ) is a German - Austrian triathlete . In 2009 he became German triathlon champion over the Olympic distance (1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running) and in 2017 Austrian state champion duathlon.

Career

Even as a child, Thomas Springer practiced competitive sports, including swimming , fin swimming (TC Orca Halle), lifeguarding ( DLRG Merseburg-Querfurt), running and boxing (City Champion of Halle 1994). From September 1995 to July 2001 he attended the secondary sports school in Halle. Until June 1998 he was a swimmer at SV Halle (main swimming type breast). After several injuries in 1997 and 1998, the further stay at the secondary sports school in Halle was in question.

In July 1998 Springer won a triathlon for the first time (state championship Saxony-Anhalt ). Springer then moved to the triathlon department of SV Halle and in 2000 took second place in the A-Youth at the German championship in Bornhöved .

German Junior Champion Duathlon 2002

The years 2002 to 2004 were his most successful years to date (among others among the juniors: overall European Cup winner, European runner-up, German duathlon champion).

In February 2005, Thomas Springer fell ill with glandular fever and the following year he returned to the European Cup in Geneva with 21st place. At the German U23 championships, he took fifth place, followed by two third places at the European Cups in Kuşadası and the Alpine Triathlon in Schliersee and sixth place at the U23 World Championship in Hamburg in 2007 . In November and December he gained his first experience at World Cups, which also marked his departure from the U23.

In 2008 he fell ill with Guillain-Barré syndrome . In June he finished sixth at the European Cup in Schliersee. In the triathlon Bundesliga , he secured the German runner-up with TVG Buschhütten. At the end of the year Springer achieved fourth place in the World Cup final in Mexico .

German triathlon champion 2009

At the start of the 2009 season, Thomas Springer qualified for the European Championship. In Schliersee he took second place behind the Russian Ivan Vasiliev and became German triathlon champion. At the end of the season he and his team from TVG Buschhütten also secured the title in the 1st Bundesliga .

In April 2010 he won the 10 km run at the Hanover Marathon . In the 2010 season Thomas Springer started in the Triathlon Bundesliga for the Asics Team Witten.
His bike ride at a Bundesliga race in Gladbeck in May 2010 with just one shoe caused a sensation : Although this was a rule violation according to the rules of the German Triathlon Union , his disqualification, which was only imposed at the finish, was withdrawn after months of legal dispute and the championship title in 2010 subsequently awarded to the Asics Team Witten.

Start for Austria since 2010

Thomas Springer also took on Austrian citizenship in 2010 and has been working for the Austrian Triathlon Association since July 2010 . He finished the 2015 ITU annual ranking in 80th place.

2016 Summer Olympics

Thomas Springer competed in the triathlon with Sara Vilic and Julia Hauser (nominated for Lisa Perterer ) at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and finished in 47th place. In the ITU Point List 2016, he was ranked 48th as the best Austrian.

State champion duathlon 2017

In September Springer won the title of Austrian Duathlon State Champion in Deutschlandsberg (7.5 km running, 30 km cycling and 3.75 km running).
In July 2018, the 33-year-old in Denmark reached tenth place as the best Austrian at the Duathlon World Championships on the short distance (10 km running, 40 km cycling and 5 km running).
