geography

Geographical location

The municipality of Wettringen in the Steinfurt district is located on the northwestern edge of North Rhine-Westphalia and borders on Lower Saxony. The highest point in the municipality is in Rothenberge. In the district of Bilk the Steinfurter Aa flows into the Vechte .

Community structure

The municipality Wettringen include the following farming communities :

history

The first documented mention of June 7th, 838 is based on a donation from the " Church of Wateringas" by Emperor Ludwig the Pious to the Herford women's monastery . Wettringen is one of the oldest communities in the Münsterland. The church was founded by Charlemagne around 800 and was the original parish for later places of worship in the area. The old Romanesque church building was expanded in 1522.

During the Spanish incursions in the Eighty Years War , Wettringen was plundered several times in 1590. Also in November 1622, at the time of the Thirty Years' War , Wettringen fell victim to looting and pillage.

The "Münsterische Kanal", which was completed between Münster and the provisional terminus at Clemenshafen since 1731 , was extended to Maxhafen in 1771 and named the Max Clemens Canal after the respective prince-bishops . The originally planned connection via the Steinfurter Aa and the Vechte to Zwolle never came about, but the Maxhafen, located in the Wettringen area, experienced a lively turnover of goods, in which the local truckers also had their share. From 1733 to 1812 the postal connection also ran via Gronau to Zwolle, including the canal via Maxhafen. The canal was abandoned in 1840.

The Romanesque church was demolished in 1861, and Emil von Manger completed the construction of the neo-Gothic church in 1862/63 . The parish church of St. Petronilla still exists today.

On June 10, 1862, Burghard Freiherr von Schorlemer-Alst and 36 other farmers founded the first farmers' association in Wettringen , which was quickly followed by others. A boulder in front of the Wettringen town hall commemorates the foundation. From this, the Westphalian Farmers' Association was founded on November 30, 1871 , the predecessor association of today's Westphalian-Lippian Agricultural Association (WLV) .

The Second World War also left deep marks in betting rings. Allied tanks moved into Wettringen on March 31, 1945 , and at the end of the same year over 1200 displaced persons , mainly from Silesia , were taken into Wettringen.

A memorial and memorial still reminds of the horrors of war. The memorial was inaugurated in 1957 and commemorates the fallen of the First and Second World Wars. An earlier memorial from 1929 was abandoned in the early 1950s for traffic reasons. In 1998 the memorial was supplemented with a stele commemorating the victims of the Holocaust . Another addition was made in November 2010 in the form of a bronze plaque. This plaque is intended to reflect the change in the culture of remembrance (away from worshiping war heroes and towards commemorating the victims) since the memorial was built.

coat of arms

The blazon of the Wettringer coat of arms reads as follows: "Divided by a red bar of silver and gold, a red cloud bar, and below a red swan."

The cloud section bar represents the symbol of the noble lords of Wettringen, who at that time had their headquarters in Langenhorst . In addition to Langenhorst, Borghorst , Burgsteinfurt , Metelen and Welbergen also belonged to the Wettringen parish at that time . The red bar in the middle comes from the shield of the Herford monastery , and the swan from the coat of arms of the Prince of Bentheim and Steinfurt .

Sports

In addition to the rifle club, the sports clubs enjoy great popularity, especially Vorwärts Wettringen , with a wide range of different sports that can be practiced in the two sports halls, a gym, a sports stadium, an indoor swimming pool and several tennis and soccer fields. The handball teams in particular are very successful at the supra-district level.

Regular events

The tradition of shooting is popular in Wettringen. Almost every district has a shooting club . In many localities in Westphalia, married and non-married men are often combined in one association . This goes back to a resolution of the Prussian government in 1835. At that time the government asked the loosely existing rifle brotherhoods to organize themselves more firmly. The bachelor shooters were asked to join forces with the "old". However, the bachelors in betting rings opposed this demand and instead set their own statutes . So it turns out at the moment that in Wettringen there is the association "Bachelor Rifle Club from 1651" and the association "Men's Rifle Club from 1650".
