Winona Ryder [ wɪnoʊ̯nə ɹaɪ̯dɚ ] (* 29. October 1971 as Winona Laura Horowitz in Winona , Minnesota ) is an American actress .
life and career
Youth and career start
Winona Ryder grew up in 1978 in a community near Mendocino , California. She has a brother named Yuri (* 1976), who got his first name after Juri Gagarin , a half-sister named Sunyata (* 1968) and a half-brother named Jubal (* 1970) from her mother's first marriage, Cindy. The parents, Cindy and Michael Horowitz, belonged to the hippie movement .
In 1981 the family moved to Petaluma , California. Since Winona was considered an outsider in the state school, she was sent to a private school and later to the drama school of the American Conservatory Theater . She was discovered by a talent scout at a theatrical performance at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco at the age of thirteen . In 1985 she applied for a role in the film Desert Bloom with a video on which she recited a monologue from the book Franny and Zooey by JD Salinger . Though her colleague Annabeth Gish was chosen to cast her , director and writer David Seltzer recognized her talent and cast her as Rina in his 1986 film Lucas, about a teenager ( Corey Haim ) and his life in high school . When she was about to decide what name to use in the credits, she chose Ryder as her stage name because a Mitch Ryder song was played in the background of the credits .
Her next film was Square Dance - Reunion in Texas (1987), in which the protagonist she portrays lives between two worlds: on a traditional farm and in a big city. Ryder's performance received good reviews, although neither film was a commercial success. Her acting as Lucas led director Tim Burton to cast her in his 1988 film Beetlejuice . In this comedy she played Lydia Deetz , who moves with her family into a house that is inhabited by ghosts (played by Geena Davis , Alec Baldwin and Michael Keaton ). Both Ryder and the film received positive reviews, and Beetlejuice also hit the box office.
In 1989 she played the lead role of Veronica Sawyer in the independent film Heathers . The film is about a couple (Ryder and Christian Slater ) who kill popular schoolgirls. Ryder's agent had previously advised her against the role. The film was a financial failure, but Ryder received positive reviews. The biopic Great Balls of Fire - Jerry Lee Lewis - A Life for Rock'n'Roll (1989) was also a flop. That same year, Ryder appeared in Mojo Nixon's music video Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child .
breakthrough
In 1990 she had the breakthrough at the side of her future boyfriend Johnny Depp in Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands . The fantasy film was an international box office success. That same year, she starred in the family comedy Mermaids Kiss Better, alongside Cher and Christina Ricci . Once again, Ryder's performance received critical acclaim, and she was nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Supporting Actress category. Ryder also appeared with colleagues Cher and Ricci in the music video for The Shoop Shoop Song , the movie's theme song .
Ryder was cast in a dual role as Mina Murray and Elisabeta in Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1992 . In 1993 she starred as Blanca in the drama The Haunted House on the side of Antonio Banderas , Meryl Streep and Glenn Close . It is the film adaptation of the bestseller of the same name by Isabel Allende . Together with Michelle Pfeiffer and Daniel Day-Lewis she starred in the time of innocence , the film adaptation of the novel by Edith Wharton . Directed by Martin Scorsese , whom Ryder called "the best director in the world". Her role earned her a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and an Oscar nomination. In 1994 she received positive reviews for her role in Ben Stiller's comedy Reality Bites . She received critical acclaim and another Oscar nomination that same year as Jo in the drama Betty and Her Sisters .
In 1996 she starred alongside Daniel Day-Lewis and Joan Allen in Witch Hunt , an adaptation of Arthur Miller's play about the puritanical witch hunt in Salem . The film wasn't a success; Ryder's performance was rated benevolently. A year later, she impersonated an android in the hit horror film Alien - The Rebirth (1997) on the side of Sigourney Weavers Ripley . In 1998 she was in Woody Allen's Celebrity. Rich. Famous. seen after Drew Barrymore turned down the role.
In 1999 she was seen as a psychiatric patient with borderline syndrome in the drama Crazy , based on Susanna Kaysen's autobiographical novel. Durchgeknallt should follow the flops of recent years Ryders comeback be in Hollywood. However, the film became a breakthrough for her colleague Angelina Jolie , who won an Oscar.
The following year, she appeared alongside Richard Gere in It Began In September , a romance about an older man's love for a younger woman. She also had a guest appearance in the comedy Zoolander (2000). In October 2000, Ryder received the star number 2165 on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
Condemnation and comeback
In 2002 the comedy Mr. Deeds (with Adam Sandler ) became her biggest financial success to date. The film failed critics, and Ryder was nominated for the negative Golden Raspberry Award. That same year, she was sentenced to three years probation and 480 hours of work for repeated shoplifting of $ 5,000 worth of clothes. The incident caused a career turnaround.
She withdrew from the public eye in the following years and only started to appear in front of the camera again in 2006. That year she starred in the novel A Scanner Darkly alongside Keanu Reeves , Robert Downey Jr. and Woody Harrelson . In 2009 she made an appearance on JJ Abrams ' Star Trek as Spock's mother, Amanda Grayson . The prequel went on to be a huge hit at the box office, and Ryder earned a Scream Award for Best Guest Appearance.
She also appeared alongside Robin Wright and Julianne Moore in Rebecca Miller's Pippa Lee (2009), and alongside Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan (2010). She also starred in the television film When Love Is Not Enough: The Lois Wilson Story , for which she was nominated for the Satellite Award and the Screen Actors Guild Award .

In Tim Burton's Frankenweenie (2012) she lent her voice to the character Elsa Van Helsing . She has played the main character Joyce Byers in the Netflix series Stranger Things since 2016 . Ryder's acting performance received positive feedback, which is why her role in the series was described by many as a comeback .

The couple got engaged a few months later; the relationship ended in 1993, however.
