Radical 4 , meaning " slash ", is one of six of the 214 traditional radicals that are spelled with just one stroke.
With 18 characters in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary , this radical occurs only in relatively few combinations. In the Kangxi dictionary there are 33 characters under this radical. The line sloping to the left has been included in the Kangxi dictionary under the radicals, and this mistake has been carried over to the present day.
There are also the variants 乀 (U + 4E40) and 乁 (U + 4E41).
The character丿is similar to the Katakana ノ "no" while乀the Bopomofozeichen 乀 "egg" a lot, and the hiragana へ does "he" similarly removed.
The character 丿 (彎 wān) belongs to the eight principles of the character 永 (永字八法 Yǒngzì Bāfǎ) and is thus one of the eight basic strokes on which Chinese calligraphy is based. Based on the shape, it has the following nicknames:
- Horn of the rhinoceros (xījiǎo 犀角)
- Crab tongs (xiāzhuǎ 蟹爪)
- Take off (tiāo 挑)
- Tiger tooth (hǔyá 虎牙)
- short slash (duǎnpiě 短 撇)
- Bird pecking (niǎozhuó 鳥 啄)
- Wave (pō 波)
- Gold knife (jīndāo 金刀)
