About this picture
Rethwisch (Stormarn district), entrance to Rethwischdorf

Rethwisch ( Low German Reetwisch ) is a municipality in the Stormarn district in Schleswig-Holstein . At the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, Rethwisch was briefly the capital of the small duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön-Rethwisch .

geography

The municipality of Rethwisch consists of the seven districts Rethwischdorf, Steensrade, Frauenholz, Tralauerholz, Altenweide, Klein Boden and Treuholz.

history

The Rethwischhof estate in Rethwischfeld (incorporated by Bad Oldesloe in 1972) shows the fabric of the outworks of the Rethwisch Castle

Rethwisch was first mentioned in a document in the 11th century. The name Rethwisch, formerly also Redewisch, means reed meadow (red = reed, wisch = meadow).

In 1442 the knight Hermann von Wyersrode was the owner of the place, which later belonged to Mathias von Ratlow and which later became the property of the church. The Lübeck church sold Rethwisch to the monastery of Ratzeburg , which after a short time sold it on to Sievert von Heest. Rethwisch remained in the possession of the von Heest for about 100 years until Anna von Heest sold the village to Johann the Younger (1545–1622), the first Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg , in 1616 for 70,000 thalers .

Johann the Younger bequeathed Rethwisch along with other parts of the duchy to his son Duke Joachim Ernst , the founder of the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön branch . Joachim Ernst left the place to his sister Eleonora, who built a half-timbered mansion in a meadow. After her death in 1669 the property returned to Joachim Ernst. After his death two years later, the territory of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön was further divided among the sons of Joachim Ernst. Rethwisch went to Duke Joachim Ernst II (1637–1700), the third son. He had the manor house built by Eleonore demolished and built a stone castle, which was completed in 1699. Rethwisch was now the seat of the small duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön-Rethwisch . Joachim Ernst II was succeeded by his son Duke Johann Ernst Ferdinand (1684–1729).

Since Johann Ernst Ferdinand died without any living descendants, Rethwisch fell back to the Plön lineage and was downgraded to an office by a duchy . The castle was used by the new masters as a mint ( coin of Rethwisch ).

After the extinction of the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön line, the Danish King Friedrich V took over the partial duchy and thus Rethwisch as well. When serfdom was lifted in 1773, the Rethwisch estate was divided into parcels. The castle was demolished in 1785 as there was no need for many residences in the entire Danish state . The mint had stopped operating a few years earlier.

The Rethwischhof estate in Rethwischfeld, which today belongs to the neighboring town of Bad Oldesloe, can be seen as a trace of history as a ducal residence town . Gut Rethwischhof was not built until 1780; However, it is the former foreworks of the castle.

The Frauenholz district was originally a church property that belonged to the Marienkirche in Lübeck from 1170 to 1849 and was a so-called Lübsches Stadtstiftsdorf . With this, the sovereignty remained with Holstein , although the economic rights of use were in Lübeck. 1889 was Gutsbezirk the District Rethwisch slammed shut. When the estate districts were dissolved, Frauenholz was incorporated into Rethwisch in 1928.

Klein Boden, also called Rethwischer Boden in older sources, was created together with Groß Boden under the name Boden in the area of the desolate place and parish of Schönenborn. It belonged to the old sovereign office of Steinhorst . In 1672 Klein Boden came to the lordly office of Rethwisch , while Groß Boden remained with Steinhorst (today the Duchy of Lauenburg ), so that from now on two places existed.

With the annexation of Schleswig-Holstein by Prussia , the village was assigned to the newly founded Stormarn district in 1867 and, when the Prussian municipal constitution was introduced in 1889, it was incorporated into the Rethwisch district. From 1900 onwards, cigar production in homework developed in Klein Boden. In 1928 it was incorporated into Rethwisch together with the Frauenholz and Tralauerholz manor districts. At that time, Klein Boden had 77 inhabitants.

Buildings

The list of cultural monuments in Rethwisch (Stormarn) includes the cultural monuments entered in the list of monuments of Schleswig-Holstein.

Sports

VfL Rethwisch is a sports club with approx. 500 members, in which mainly the football and handball divisions have a large number of members. The jugger division, founded in 2011, has hosted the Schleswig-Holstein championship every year since 2005. In 2015, the German championship in juggers was won in the children's and youth areas. In 2016, the third German children's and youth championship took place in Rethwisch, and in 2018 the 21st German youth championship took place in Rethwisch.

Regular events

The cultural life in Rethwisch is characterized on the one hand by the two volunteer fire brigades Rethwischdorf and Klein Boden, on the other hand the parties, electoral associations and the Evangelical Lutheran Church regularly bring each other into conversation with various events. There is also a youth cellar in which children and young people can play and do handicrafts together once a week.

Economy and Infrastructure

Companies

The infrastructure has declined a lot in recent years. There is now a baker again, but there is no restaurant, merchant, post office or bank and only a few businesses. However, the district town of Bad Oldesloe is so close - also connected by three bus lines - that a large part of the demand can be met here.

media

Daily newspapers with a regional reference are the “Stormarner Tageblatt” as a local edition of the Schleswig-Holstein newspaper publisher (sh: z) and the local edition of the Lübecker Nachrichten . In Rethwisch the advertising papers "Markt", "Wochenblatt" and "Blickpunkt" are distributed free of charge.

traffic

Rethwisch is - not far from the federal highway 1 - extremely conveniently located, which favored the development of the place of residence. However, this advantage is mobilizing its own problems, because on the national highway 208 rolled up to the completion of the motorway 20 daily around 10,000 vehicles by Rethwisch village. With its completion, however, the situation has eased noticeably.

In addition to the bus lines 8740 (Oldesloe - Westerau - Kastorf - Berkenthin - Ratzeburg) and 8161 (Oldesloe - Meddewade - Groß Boden - Eichede - Todendorf) of the bus company Autokraft also the line 8129, the call collective taxi , runs through Rethwisch .

Until 1962 Rethwisch had the three train stations Klein Boden , Treuholz and Rethwisch along the Kaiserbahn from Hagenow via Ratzeburg to Bad Oldesloe . The route was removed from 1972.
