The Argentine national soccer team first took part in the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 and finished second there. After that, the senior national team no longer took part and when amateur teams took part from 1952 to the 1980s, Argentina could only qualify three times, but never survive the preliminary round. After the amateur rule was replaced by a betting rule and then an age limit, Argentina was able to qualify five times, most recently for the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro . With two gold (2004 and 2008) and two silver medals (1928 and 1996) Argentina is the most successful team at the Olympic Games after Hungary .
