history

The DTB was founded in 1848 on the 1st German Gymnastics Day in Hanau . A first German gymnastics festival was held in Coburg in 1860 . In 1868 the DTB became part of the Deutsche Turnerschaft (DT) . Parallel to the DT, the social democratically oriented Workers 'Gymnastics Association (ATB) was founded in 1893, which has been called the Workers' Gymnastics and Sports Association (ATSB) since 1919 and was banned by the National Socialists in 1933. In 1933 the DT tried to introduce itself as a further pillar in the NSDAP alongside the SA , but this failed because the dominance of an association that was hostile to competitive sports at the time would have hindered the NSDAP's claim to dominate the best men through sports. In 1935 the self-dissolution of the DT took place in the course of the Gleichschaltung during the National Socialism . After the Second World War, the German Gymnastics Working Committee (DAT) was founded during the first unofficial German championship in artistic gymnastics in Northeim on September 13, 1947 , the pioneer of the DTB, which was re-established in Tübingen in 1950 . In 1952 it had 900,000 members in over 6,100 clubs. In 1953 there was the first German Gymnastics Festival in the Federal Republic, the venue was Hamburg .

In 2005 the first International German Gymnastics Festival (IDTF) took place in Berlin . The next followed in 2009 in Frankfurt am Main and the third was held in May 2013 in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. In 2017 the International German Gymnastics Festival was held again in Berlin under the motto "How colorful is that".

The DTB already hosted the Trampoline World Championships in Hanover in 2003 (October 16-19) and in 2007 the EnBW Gymnastics World Championships in Stuttgart (September 1-9, 2007). In 2010, the DTB hosted the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships (April 15th to 18th) in Bremen and a year later the European Gymnastics Championships (April 4th to 10th) in Berlin. The 2015 World Championships in Rhythmic Gymnastics in Stuttgart was the next big event that the DTB hosted. Pauline Schäfer won the first world championship title for the German Gymnastics Federation at the 2017 World Championships in Montréal . She is the second German gymnast after Dörte Thümmler who has achieved this success on the balance beam .

Controversy

Chemnitz gymnastics affair

In November 2020, several active and former competitive athletes and trainers, including Pauline Schäfer and Lisa Hill , spoke publicly about their multi-year training at the federal base of the German Gymnastics Federation in Chemnitz , about the derogatory, inhuman and reckless treatment or psychological violence and abuse of power on the part should have been shaped by a trainer. In addition, underage athletes have received prescription drugs without parental consent and permission to continue training despite the pain. These were often not taken seriously by the trainer. The management of the Olympiastützpunkt Chemnitz contradicted parts of the report, while the federal base manager initially did not comment. With Sophie Scheder , an athlete did not agree to the allegations. The accused trainer rejected the allegations as "unfounded". The German Gymnastics Federation announced an independent investigation, which was commissioned from a law firm. After the report was published, other athletes made similar reports in which they also stated that they had suffered from the trainer and sometimes developed psychological disorders in the form of self-harming behavior and eating disorders . A little later, two other former athletes at the Chemnitz base reported, at the instigation of the (criticized) trainer and a doctor, that they had received injections as part of neural therapy when they were underage without their parents knowing about or approving this treatment. In contrast, parents of gymnasts training in Chemnitz, together with the coaching team of TuS 1861 Chemnitz-Altendorf , which trains the Chemnitz athletes together with the criticized trainer, published a statement in which they expressed their "complete confidence" in the trainer.

In January 2021, the DTB published the results of the investigation by the law firm involved. In it, they stated that they had analyzed the statements made by those involved for their truthfulness, had "compared the evidence ... with the information provided by the respondent" and "assessed the consistency between the information provided by different respondents". In 17 cases the law firm sees “there are actual indications for the use of psychological violence by the trainer”. Furthermore, the law firm considers the allegations of increased administration of painkillers and the one-time administration of the opioid tilidine as well as the allegations of exercising despite pain and crying to be given. In the course of the investigation, the law firm was unable to determine whether the development of the reported mental disorders was due to the trainer. After the investigation, the DTB sees serious breaches of duty at the federal base in Chemnitz confirmed and sees itself and the care and training of children and adolescents in young athletes being put to the test. The DTB demanded personnel consequences, suggested cross-sport structural changes and demanded sport-political measures for gymnastics in Germany and internationally.

At TuS 1861 Chemnitz-Altendorf, the investigation carried out and the behavior of the German Gymnastics Federation caused criticism. The president of the association described the investigation as "doubtful" and announced that the Chemnitz association would not recognize the results of the investigation. He also rejected the personnel consequences demanded by the DTB. He also criticized the DTB for the fact that there was no concept of how the suspension of the controversial trainer should be intercepted. Again parents of gymnasts training in Chemnitz spoke up and also questioned the investigation. They questioned whether 32 interviews carried out, which lasted an average of 3.5 hours and left 800 pages of minutes, the firm's investigation was sufficiently well founded. They again expressed their confidence in the trainer and demanded that the trainer's suspension be lifted.
