Épernay [ ˌe.pɛʀˈnɛ ] is a town in Champagne in France , capital of the arrondissement Épernay in the west of the Marne department . It is divided into the cantons Épernay-1 and Épernay-2 and has 22,671 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), around 34,000 in the metropolitan area. The inhabitants of Épernay are called "Sparnaciens" in French, this name is based on the Latin name of the city of Sparnacum .
Épernay is located in a wine-growing region and is one of the main centers of champagne production. For this reason, the Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne is also located here. The tunnels carved into the limestone cliffs, which serve as wine cellars for the large trading houses in Champagne, are worth seeing. The well-known Moët & Chandon house alone owns around 110 km of these tunnels.
The city is associated with the Montagne de Reims Regional Natural Park as an access point.
Épernay as a railway junction
Épernay was one of the first major railway hubs in France; the Épernay-Reims railway has been branching off the Paris-Strasbourg main line here since 1854 .
The locomotive workshop of the French Eastern Railway was also located in Epernay . Here u. a. from 1852 built the famous "Crampton locomotives" (based on the patent of Thomas Russell Crampton ), which shaped the image of the Eastern Railway for many decades,
