Eurosong 2014 was the title of the Belgian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 . It was regularly initiated by the Flemish radio VRT and broadcast on the television channel één . Axel Hirsoux emerged as the winner with the title Mother , which was the first time that a Wallon from VRT entered the international competition. All shows were moderated by Eva Daeleman and Peter Van de Veire.
format
After the VRT determined its last two representatives and in 2010 also the song internally, in 2014 they returned to a public preliminary decision with several preliminary rounds. A completely new mode was implemented:
Initially, two calls were launched, on the one hand the submission of songs and on the other hand the application as an artist. Soloists and groups should perform a previous title of the Eurovision Song Contest in their own version, film the performance in a video and upload it to YouTube or send it to the broadcaster on DVD. The VRT selected thirty soloists and groups who were allowed to audition in two casting rounds. The performances were rated by the jury, and each juror expressed their satisfaction in the form of a percentage. The arithmetic mean was calculated from these evaluations. The four performers with the highest overall ranking went straight to the semi-finals, the candidates in places five to eight competed against each other in the so-called callback. As a result, 14 of the original 30 candidates were eliminated after the auditions.
In the callback, each of the eight candidates performed another cover of an ESC song. For the first time, the audience's favor also flowed into the result, because the decision as to which four performers were allowed to enter the semi-finals was determined by the jury half and the other half by the result of the SMS and Internet voting. There were twelve candidates left for the semi-finals.
All candidates who at least made it into the callback were assigned a new title, but out of a total of 16 songs only twelve were performed in the live shows. All songs were published on a compilation CD and as a download. In the three semifinals, the candidates performed their potential songs for the ESC in Copenhagen for the first time . Here, too, the results of the judges and the audience each made up 50% of the total, with two songs each reaching the final.
A total of six songs competed in the final. The jury only had an advisory function; it was replaced by a European panel: seven juries from seven European countries assessed the entries. Your favorite got 12 points each, places two to five each received 10, 8, 6 and 4 points. One song came out empty-handed by every jury. The spectators made up the other half of the result. They awarded a total of 280 points (as many as all of the juries put together); the distribution was based on the overall result of all votes cast. So if a contribution received ten percent of the vote, it received ten percent of the 280 points, i.e. 28 points. The song with the most points won the competition. The awarding of points is based on the Swedish Melodifestivalen .
The auditions and the final took place in the Sportpaleis in Antwerp , the other live shows in the Videohouse, a television studio in Vilvoorde .
jury
The jury consisted of four members:
- Jef Martens aka Basto , disc jockey
- Piet Goddaer aka Ozark Henry , singer
- Ruslana , winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2004
- Bart Peeters , former presenter of Eurosong
Castings
The two castings were recorded on December 3, 2013 at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp . A total of 30 performers faced a three-person jury. Ruslana , who should also be part of the jury, was unable to attend due to the unrest in her Ukrainian homeland . 15 appearances were shown per broadcast. The performers had to perform a cover of a song that had previously been featured in the Eurovision Song Contest. Four performers qualified for the semi-finals, four for the program Callback.
First casting
The recording of the first casting was broadcast on February 2, 2014.

Trivia
- Nelson (Moraïs) took part in the Belgian preliminary round in 2008 .
- The duo Aelia consisted of Veronica Codesal and Soetkin Collier. They belonged to the band Urban Trad , which represented Belgium at the ESC 2003 with the title Sanomi . When the group took second place in Riga , only Codesal was there.
- The members of the band Day One kept their identities a secret (at all appearances they wore masks that covered their entire face, and the singer wore a wig) and did not disclose it even after she left. Rumors that the singer could be Kate Ryan (she represented Belgium at the ESC 2006 with Je t'adore ) have not been confirmed or refuted to this day.
