The Karlsruhe University has about 8,000 students is one of the largest Universities of Applied Sciences (formerly University of Applied Sciences ) in Baden-Wuerttemberg .

The studies

The courses of study include technical-engineering, computer science, economics and construction-specific disciplines and lead to the degrees of Bachelor and Master . As the first professional qualification, the bachelor's degree can be obtained after seven semesters of standard study time, the master's degree after a further three semesters. These degrees were introduced at the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences in 1999 as part of the Bologna reform .

Part of the course are laboratory exercises, practical semesters and theses, which are usually done in an external company. Research activities have increasingly been integrated into several degree programs since 2000, and some degree programs are viewed as research-oriented.

Faculties

The Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences has the following faculties:

  • Architecture and Construction (AB)
  • Electrical engineering and information technology (EIT)
  • Computer Science and Business Informatics (IWI)
  • Information Management and Media (IMM)
  • Mechanical engineering and mechatronics (MMT)
  • Economics (W)

International contacts

The university has contacts to around 100 partner universities in 30 countries around the world, which are maintained centrally by the International Office (AAA). Semesters abroad are possible through exchange programs.

Partnerships with foreign universities also serve to plan and carry out international research projects, and guest lecturers are invited to lectures. The Master’s degree in Sensor Systems Technology is carried out entirely, while the Master’s degree in Geomatics is mainly conducted in English as the language of instruction. In cooperation with partner universities in France and Switzerland, the tri-national bachelor's and master's degree in civil engineering is also offered, which leads to a German, a French and a Swiss university degree.

Double degrees in computer science, civil engineering, construction management and construction, vehicle technology, geomatics, business informatics, international management and electrical engineering can be obtained with partner universities in France, Great Britain, the USA, Switzerland, Spain and Canada.

The four-semester ERASMUS Mundus master’s course in Mechatronic and Micro-Mechatronic Systems (EU4M) started for the first time in the 2008/09 winter semester and takes place at three European universities in Spain, France and Germany. Here, students can deepen their knowledge of mechatronics and micromechatronics and learn the language and culture of other countries.

Applied research

In terms of research, the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences has the highest third-party funding in Baden-Württemberg. Application-oriented research and development projects are the focus. The expansion of practice-oriented research is a strategic goal of the university.

The university's research activities are bundled in two central research institutions - the Institute for Applied Research (IAF) and the Institute of Materials and Processes (IMP), which was founded in 2009 . In addition to these two central institutes, there are other decentralized research facilities such as the Institute for Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Environmental Technology (IKKU), which has meanwhile been expanded into a nationwide unique refrigeration center.

The efeuAkademie was started in September 2019 by the Institute for Energy Efficient Mobility (IEEM) . As part of the EU-funded lighthouse project efeuCampus , the efeuAkademie represents a communicative interface between the project partners and the general public. In addition, it offers regular information events and presents solutions on the topic of Smart City .

further education

Scientific continuing education at the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences is a core task alongside teaching and research - this is how it is regulated by the University Act of Baden-Württemberg. Technological development is progressing faster and faster in many disciplines. The engineering profession in particular is subject to rapid change. In practice, additional knowledge, for example in the areas of management, communication or capital goods sales and exports, is urgently required. Lifelong learning has become the norm.

The Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences therefore offers a further training program at a demanding level to meet the new needs. University lecturers dedicate themselves to the transfer of new knowledge into practice. The university's continuing education offer is bundled in the Institute for Scientific Continuing Education (IWW) .

Cooperations

Within the Karlsruhe technology region, the university cooperates with KIT (the merger of Karlsruhe University (TH) and Karlsruhe Research Center ); here, a joint graduate college and the connection of the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences library to the KIT library should be mentioned. There are also close contacts with the Fraunhofer Institute for Optronics, System Technology and Image Evaluation (IOSB, formerly IITB) and the Federal Institute for Hydraulic Engineering in Karlsruhe.
