geography

Geographical location

The Far North District is the northernmost district in New Zealand . It is located at the northern tip of the North Island and with 6678 km² of pure land is the largest district in the Northland region. With 55,731 inhabitants in 2013, the district has a population density of 8.3 inhabitants per km².

The district is surrounded to the west by the Tasman Sea and to the north and east by the Pacific Ocean . In the south it borders the Kaipara District to the west and the Whangarei District to the east .

The Far North District has 2347 km of coastline. While the west coast with Ninety Mile Beach and the coast further south is mostly very straight, the east coast is very rugged and has numerous bays, of which Doubtless Bay , Rangaunu Bay , Takou Bay and the Bay of Islands are the largest , and natural harbors, of which Parengarenga Harbor , Rangaunu Harbor and Whangaroa Harbor are also the largest. At the northern tip of the district, three capes define the coastal landscape, Cape Maria van Diemen , Cape Reinga and the North Cape .

Near the point where the Far North District , the Kaipara District and the Whangarei District meet, is the Waipoua Forest, one of the largest remaining Kauri forest areas in the country.

The three largest cities in the district are Kerikeri with 6507 inhabitants, Kaitaia with 4887 inhabitants and Kaikohe with 3915 inhabitants (as of 2013).

climate

The climate in the district is determined by the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean and is known as subtropical . The average typical daytime temperatures are between 22 ° C and 26 ° C in summer and between 12 ° C and 17 ° C in winter. Temperatures of 28 ° C are reached more often, 30 ° C less often. The average duration of sunshine is around 2100 hours per year.

history

The Far North District has the longest history of settlement by the Māori and Europeans. According to the legend of the Māori , their Polynesian ancestors are said to have discovered and settled New Zealand over 1000 years ago in what is now the Far North District . The Mātaatua Waka , the waka of the leader Puhi , is reported to have landed at Tākou Bay on the east coast. The Hokianga Harbor was also the center of settlement by the Māori .

Later, at the beginning of the 19th century, Europeans settled in the Bay of Islands , where the town of Russel initially gained great importance. Not far from him, the Waitangi Treaty between the leaders of the Māori tribes and the European immigrants was signed in Waitangi in 1840 . The place has since been considered the birthplace of the New Zealand nation.

population

Population development

Of the district's 55,731 inhabitants, 22,110 were of Māori origin in 2013 (39.7%). This means that 3.7% of the country's Māori population lived in the Far North District . The median income in the population in 2013 was NZ $ 21,500  compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.
