The Fiat 124 Spider is a passenger car model from the Italian car manufacturer Fiat . It is based on the Japanese Mazda MX-5 roadster and is built together with it at the Mazda plant in Hiroshima . In contrast to the Mazda, the Fiat 124 Spider is available with turbocharging . The name is reminiscent of the Fiat 124 built between 1966 and 1985 , which was also available as a roadster (called Spider ).

Model history

The 124 Spider had its world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2015, and the first vehicles in Germany were delivered in June 2016 at prices starting at 23,990 euros. For the market launch, the first 124 vehicles were sold as a special model 124 Spider Anniversary with exclusive equipment and a numbered badge in the interior. An Abarth version with 125 kW (170 hp) made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2016 . It has been available since September 2016 from 40,000 euros.

Abarth presented the 124 GT at the Geneva Motor Show 2018. This is only available in a gray finish and has a 16 kilogram hard top made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic .

In November 2019 it became known that only remnants of the roadster were being sold in Germany. The series will continue to be produced for other markets.

technology

The technology of the 124 Spider is essentially based on the Mazda MX-5 (ND) . The transmission of the Spider, however, comes from the third MX-5 generation (NC), as it can better process the higher torques of the turbo engine. Apart from a few marginal differences in the suspension, the chassis is also from the MX-5 ND. The body is 14 cm longer, the interior except for the Fiat emblems and slightly higher quality equipment elements as in the ND. The most striking difference is the 1.4-liter turbo engine used by Fiat, as the fourth generation of the MX-5 also uses a naturally aspirated engine. On the US market, the Fiat 124 Spider is offered with the same displacement with 160 hp and an optional automatic transmission .
