Under the title Germany 12 Points! the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2004 took place on March 19, 2004 in Berlin . The competition was organized by NDR in cooperation with the music broadcaster VIVA . It was broadcast from the sold out arena in the Berlin district of Treptow with 6,000 spectators . The show was moderated by Sarah Kuttner and Jörg Pilawa .

Before the show

In contrast to the following year, the preparation of the 2004 preliminary decision was a media spectacle. An advantage for some of the candidates was that they had a relationship with and took advantage of television. VIVA introduced the participants in the Euroclash series . The criticism of the hit scene (see below) was a hit for tabloid magazines , which supported the media presence of the preliminary decision.

Rules of the preliminary decision 2004

The concept of the German qualifying round for the Eurovision Song Contest has been completely redesigned. Participation was only allowed to performers who were represented in the charts with their contribution and who could already show a video on VIVA.

For the first time, so-called wild cards were also awarded, which should enable artists with great chart success to take part in the preliminary round at short notice apart from the Viva qualification.

This rule was used by both Max Mutzke and the singer Masha. While the former was able to qualify without any problems, Frank Elstner's daughter did not make it into the field.

On the other hand, rejections came from the hip-hop formation Beginner and the Donots , who first applied for the field of participants, but then dropped out again without giving any reasons. Other possible participants were Sportfreunde Stiller , the dance formation Groove Coverage and the soul singer Joy Denalane .

The result of the new concept was clear. In contrast to the competitions of previous years, music from different styles was offered and the competition was rejuvenated. This was met with divided opinions. The hit scene, above all Bernhard Brink , Nicole and Michelle , felt excluded from participation by these rules and expressed themselves critically for weeks on the concept and participants in the media. Ralph Siegel did not take part in the preliminary round for Germany, but worked as a producer for Julie & Ludwig and their contribution to Malta in the race.

Participants with a lasting impression

After the success of the past few years with Guildo Horn and his own appearance, Stefan Raab was back again . In his ProSieben broadcast TV total he started the SSDSGPS campaign (Stefan is looking for the Super Grand Prix star), an allusion to the talent show Deutschland sucht den Superstar . The winner Max Mutzke qualified after his victory at the show through the entry of his single Can't Wait Until Tonight at number one in the German charts. Even before that, he was considered a favorite.

In the run-up, the competition from pop stars , the boy band Overground , was traded high within the industry . Many viewers, however, counted on the band MIA. with the song Hungriges Herz, which is rather untypical for her, high chances.

The most unusual appearances of this year were the representatives of electronic sounds, Scooter as well as Westbam and Afrika Islam . Scooters supported their appearance with Jigga Jigga with lightly clad dancers and fireworks . Westbam and Afrika Islam presented their contribution Dancing with the Rebels with a police show.

With the exception of Tina Frank , who was the only newcomer of the evening to introduce the song I give you my heart to the cartoon adaptation of Derrick and previously only appeared as a female voice in the songs of Oli.P , all participants were already known.

procedure

The viewers could cast their votes via SMS or telephone . For the first round, all candidates competed against each other. From this two winners were determined who had to compete against each other again. In contrast to the previous year, this time only two instead of three participants made it to the final.
