House Jiménez

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jiménez family is the family of the kings of Pamplona who made the Kingdom of Navarre . They ruled from the beginning of the 9th century. The older line of the dynasty, the descendants of Iñigo Jiménez, is also known as the House of Iñiguez .

The acquisition of the county of Aragón in the middle of the 10th century and the county of Castile at the beginning of the 11th century brought a large part of the Iberian Peninsula back into one (Christian) hand for the first time since the Islamic invasion at the beginning of the 8th century. However, the division of inheritance that followed in the next generation destroyed this again.

The line of kings of Navarre died out in 1234, and the land went to the House of Blois . The line of the kings of Castile (and León) died out in 1126, the land went to the House of Burgundy-Ivrea . The line of the kings of Aragón finally died out in 1137, the land went to the house of Barcelona . It was not until the marriage of Isabella I of Castile and León and Ferdinand II of Aragón and Barcelona in 1469 and their accession to power in 1474 and 1479 respectively that a new agreement was reached - from which the Habsburgs would primarily benefit in the next generation . Combined with the conquest of Granada in 1492 and the conquest of Navarre as far as the Pyrenees 20 years later, the Kingdom of Spain finally emerged within its current borders.
