The district of Ilam ( Nepali इलाम IAST ilām ) is one of 77 districts in Nepal and has belonged to Province No. 1 since the 2015 constitution .
geography
It has an area of 1703 km² and in 2001 had 282,806 inhabitants. The administrative seat of the district is the city of the same name Ilam . The district is located around 600 kilometers east of the Nepalese capital Kathmandu and borders the Nepalese districts Jhapa , Panchthar and Morang as well as the West Bengal district Darjiling .
Ilam stretches from the fertile Terai plain to the hilly foreland of the Himalayas . The highest point in the district is around 3000 m above sea level. The region is often visited by naturalists because of its rare bird species and the native small panda . The name Ilam comes from the Limbu and means "winding road".
politic and economy
Ilam is one of the most economically developed regions in Nepal. The tea grown there is also exported to Europe as Ilam Tea . In addition to tea, cardamom , ginger and potatoes are also grown in the district and milk is produced. From a religious point of view, the Devi temple has a special meaning as a place of pilgrimage. A tourist attraction is the Mai Pokhari Lake, which is considered the "residence of the goddess".
During the civil war from 1994 to 2006, Ilam was widely featured in the media as the Maoists who led a peasant revolt against the monarchy were active in the area.
