The current license plates of Greece were introduced in 2004. Greek signs are vehicle-specific and remain on the vehicle even when it is sold or moved, which only allows limited conclusions to be drawn about the region of origin.

layout

With black lettering on a white background, the license plates correspond to those of most other EU countries. At the left edge there is also a blue band with the star circle of the European Union and the nationality symbol GR underneath. The sign begins with three letters, the first two of which provide information about the local traffic authority with which the vehicle was first registered. As a rule, the approval areas coincide with the prefectures or their administrative headquarters. In some districts the third letter is made dependent on the type of vehicle, so some letters are only used for motorcycles, others only for cars. The letters are followed by a hyphen under a seal that reads ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ (Ellinikí Dimokratía, Hellenic Republic ). The sign ends with a four-digit number between 1000 and 9999. Custom license plates are not available in Greece.

Only letters that appear - at least in terms of their external appearance - in both the Greek and Latin alphabet (A, B, E, H, I, K, M, N, O, P, T, X , Y and Z). Special signs for police, military, etc., however, contain additional Greek letters.

The license plates are also available in a two-line version, which is much less common. For motorcycles, reduced two-line characters are issued that show a maximum of three digits under the three letters. The numbering starts here - in contrast to the car signs - with 1. Leading zeros are not used.

The basic scheme of license plates was introduced back in 1983. Until the revision and introduction of the Euro field in 2004, a more angular font was used. In addition, the signs were significantly shorter at 330 × 100 mm (front) and 425 × 120 mm (rear).

License plate variants

  • Yellow license plates with black inscription are used on trucks, buses and taxis. The letters of these signs do not provide any information about the origin; however, specific series of letters are assigned to certain vehicle classes. For example, the letter blocks TAA and TAB are reserved for taxis.
  • Orange license plates are reserved for government vehicles. The letter block starts here with a Κ .
  • For vehicles with a reduced tax rate and vehicles imported into Greece by foreigners, white signs with red letters are used.
  • Tags for tags show the single letter Ρ , followed by a seal, a hyphen and five digits.

Special identifier

Special license plates are issued in Greece for many purposes and organizations. These do not correspond to the appearance of the standard license plates and also show Greek letters. As a rule, the license plates start with letters and end with numbers.

  • In the case of diplomatic plates, the first group of numbers indicates the country of origin of the mission.
  • Military shields begin with a variant of the Greek flag .
  • License plates for police or port police and coast guard show two blue, Greek letters and a four to five-digit number block.
  • Green font is used for export indicators. They show a letter, four digits and an indication of the validity on the right edge.
  • The metropolitan official cars use special license plates with gold three-dimensional letters on a black background (more rarely black and white).

Autonomous Republic of Athos

The Autonomous Monastic Republic of Athos had its own license plates until 2004, but these were not recognized internationally. These were white, began with AO (Agion Oros = Holy Mountain) followed by a crowned double-headed eagle and one to three digits. Since 2004 the license plates have been similar to the Greek ones: the EU banderole is identical, but the structure is different. The first two letters are still AO, followed by the double-headed eagle, as well as three and two digits, separated by a seal. In contrast to the Greek license plates, Athos uses the FE script. These labels are recognized and valid worldwide due to the EU banderole.
