Cherry blossom race 2011 - main draw elite

The Wels cherry blossom race is the oldest and with around 600 participants one of the most important road bike races in Austria . In contrast to conventional road bike races, the participants in all categories start at the same time. The name refers to the time of the annual implementation in April, around the cherry blossom .

history

Cherry blossom race 1977 - Mistelbacherberg mountain classification

In 1961 the Wels cherry blossom race was launched by the organizers Harry Amringer, Josef Lehner, Hans Steiner, Gerhard Stibal and Otto Hammerschmid. The original route led from Wels via Bad Schallerbach to Wallern and Eferding . A women's rating was introduced for the first time in 2011. The cherry blossom race is currently classified as an Austrian cup race for all race categories, except the elite .

organizer

Together with the sports department of the city of Wels, RC ARBÖ Wels Gourmetfein is the official organizer of the Wels cherry blossom race. The RC ARBÖ Wels Gourmetfein (name: as of 2008/2009 and similar until 2012) was founded in 1921 and is also the organizer of the largest Wels sport event, the Wels inner city criterion . With around 300 members, it is one of the most popular cycling clubs in Austria. The chairman Wilfried Luger is also the main organizer of the cherry blossom race.

The start and finish of the race has been in Oberfeldstrasse in Wels-Nord in the Neustadt district in front of the Interspar department store since 1990 . The route: Wels - Haiding  - Buchkirchen  - Scharten  - Rexham  - Unterscharten  - Mistelbacherberg ( mountain classification ) - Mistelbach  - Oberprisching  - Buchkirchen - Merkermeierberg  - Wels. The route length is 35.2 km. There is also a small circuit of 15.4 km, which leads from Wels - Haiding - Kreuzung / Buchkirchen - Merkermeierberg - Wels. The drivers of the individual categories have to drive different route lengths. In the early years a distance was about 40 km, which was driven 3 times. In the course of time, the race became much more demanding, both due to the greater length of the route (now around 170 km) and the topography . The average speed of the winners is around 40–42 km / h.

Medical and technical support

The city of Wels and the neighboring places that are passed through provide fire brigades and rescue services. The police and other bodies authorized to monitor ensure that the safety of the racing drivers and other road users is ensured. Doping tests are carried out in advance according to the regulations of the National Anti-Doping Agency .

Catering

As with all endurance sports, good food for the driver is very important in order to maintain performance and to counteract any health risks. The drivers are catered for with the help of refreshment zones. The refreshment zone is located starting from the end of Buchkirchen in the direction of Schnadt. This must be 1 km long and is located in an area where the drivers do not drive too fast. According to the regulations, a race that extends over a distance of 50 km should / may be equipped with a refreshment zone. Food can be served up to 20 km before the finish. The drivers are fed by volunteers through to professional supervisors for the individual drivers and teams. With almost 600 starters, at least half of whom would like to be fed, perfect coordination of all those involved in this section of the route is necessary in order to be able to guarantee a smooth process. Since environmental protection is taken very seriously at the cherry blossom race, drivers are only allowed to throw away their rubbish in the refreshment zone. Violations of these additional regulations will be punished.

Cherry blossom race 1982 - start Grieskirchnerstraße Wels

The cherry blossom race is one of the most popular sporting events in Wels. Every year more and more cycling enthusiasts attend this race, in addition to the well-known Wels inner city criterion. The residents in and around Wels are an important motivating factor for the drivers. Often, however, fans involuntarily become obstacles for the drivers.

Sponsors and advertising

Every year we try to find a name sponsor for the race. In 2010 and 2011, an Upper Austrian real estate company was the name and main sponsor. The elite drivers and teams are also dependent on sponsors . A list of these sponsors can be found in the annual information brochure.

Others

The first race Wels-Eferding-Scharten-Wels was organized for the first time in April 1961.

According to Harry Amringer (April 2011) the cherries bloomed in gashes in 40 of 50 races, once the race had to be shortened - "we were driving on snow". In the first few years the tour led via Bad Schallerbach, Wallern to Eferding. "We changed the route because the cyclists always had to wait in front of the railway crossings in Eferding."

Initially, the race started in Grieskirchnerstrasse at height no. 72 (today: Sparkasse branch), later the start and finish was 900 m further into town at the Neustädter Volksschule Grillparzerstrasse 2 and thus almost at the beginning of Grieskirchnerstrasse. Starting in 1990, the start will take place 1.6 km further out of town near Grieskirchnerstraße at the Interspar shopping center (closed on Sundays) in Oberfeldstraße. A large car parking lot is available there and the increased inner-city traffic is avoided.

For the first time in 2009, an athlete riding for the host Welser Radclub won the race: Werner Riebenbauer. In 2009 the police vehicle in front of the car turned wrongly in Buchkirchen, but the racing drivers chose the right route from experience.

Route length

In 2011, 600 to 700 starters were expected and the professionals (category: Elite) drove 171.6 kilometers and overcame more than 1,600 meters in altitude. Hobby cyclists, juniors and masters (aged 40 and over) rode 105.6 kilometers (1200 m), women and juniors 70.4 km, the U15 athletes and girls 35.2 kilometers (400 m). The individual evaluation groups were started on Sundays between 9 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. at the Interspar shopping center, Oberfeldstrasse.
