About this picture

The district of Kamenz ( Upper Sorbian Wokrjes Kamjenc , from January 1 to March 31, 1996 district of Westlausitz-Dresdner Land ) was a district in East Saxony that existed until the district reform in 2008 . Neighboring districts in the north were the Brandenburg districts Oberspreewald-Lausitz and Spree-Neiße , in the east the Lower Silesian Oberlausitzkreis , in the southeast the district Bautzen , in the south the district Saxon Switzerland , in the southwest the independent city of Dresden and in the west the districts Meißen and Riesa-Großenhain . The district was a member of the Neisse Euroregion . The largest city in the district was Radeberg , the district seat was in Kamenz .

The district-free city of Hoyerswerda was an enclave in the northeastern district . Like the whole region, the Kamenz district also had to contend with declining population figures due to emigration and low birth rates.

history

The district was formed on January 1, 1996 from the Kamenz district, which was supplemented by parts of the former Dresden and Hoyerswerda districts (excluding the city of Hoyerswerda, which was independent from January 1, 1996 ). Parts of the former district of Bischofswerda were incorporated on August 1, 1994. Until March 31, 1996, the new district was called "Landkreis Westlausitz-Dresdner Land". Originally Westlausitzkreis was intended as a name by the Ministry of the Interior.

In the spring of 2004, the District Office's exit from the municipal employers' association caused a stir .

On August 1, 2008, the Kamenz district was merged with the independent city of Hoyerswerda and the Bautzen district to form the new Bautzen district .

politics

Petra Kockert (CDU) was most recently the district administrator of the Kamenz district.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of the district of Kamenz

The winning coat of arms of a competition of the district, designed by Jürgen Zimmermann, was approved by the Dresden Regional Council on February 16, 1998 .

Blazon : Split; in front a silver wavy bar in blue, above a golden linden leaf, underneath three 2: 1 interlaced golden rings; behind in gold black eagle flight.

Blue and gold as the colors of Upper Lusatia form the basis on which the other symbols are based. The linden leaf as a symbol of the Sorbs indicates that parts of the district are located in the Sorbian settlement area. The waves are a reference to the rivers of the district ( Große and Kleine Röder , Schwarze Elster and Spree ); while the three rings from the coat of arms of the old Kamenz district, which was valid until 1952, were taken up. They recall the message of Lessing's ring parable and also that Gotthold Ephraim Lessing was born in Kamenz. They also symbolize the connection between the three different regions of the district (Kamenz, Hoyerswerda, Dresdner Land). The eagle flight is a symbol of the coat of arms of the former Lords of Kamenz.
