The men's 100-meter race at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place on August 7th and 8th, 1983 in Helsinki , Finland .
65 athletes from 48 countries took part in the world championships. The Americans recorded a triple success in this competition. Carl Lewis became world champion , two days later also gold medalist in the long jump and on the final day as a member of the US 4 x 100 meter relay . He won ahead of Calvin Smith , who won the 200 meter race a week later and also won a second gold medal on the final day as a member of the US 4 x 100 meter relay. Bronze went to Emmit King , who, like Carl Lewis and Calvin Smith, won the sprint relay on the final day.
Records
Before the competition, the following records were in place:
World record | Calvin Smith | 9.93 s | Colorado Springs , United States | 3rd July 1983 |
World championship record | There were still no World Cup records, the event was held for the first time |
The wind conditions were not favorable in numerous races, and all too often the sprinters had to struggle with headwinds. The world championship record was gradually increased to 10.07 seconds ( Carl Lewis , USA in the final on August 8, 1983).
