economy

The inhabitants of Les Cabannes lived less from agriculture than from forestry and from handicrafts and trade. In the late Middle Ages, the gold panning in the Ariège river bed is mentioned; there were also several water mills and sawmills operated with water power.

history

For a long time, Les Cabannes was part of the neighboring town and the castellany of Château-Verdun ; in 1224 it is mentioned as belonging to the Abbey of Saint-Volusien in Foix.

Attractions

  • The location of the place at the foot of a 1484 meter high mountain ( Massif du Quié ) is the greatest attraction.
  • The parish church of Saint-Martial is an 18th century building; the interior was painted in the 19th century.
