Les Cabannes is a place and a southern French community ( commune ) with 333 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ariege .
location
The place Les Cabannes is at an altitude of about 535 meters above sea level. d. M. at the foot of the Pyrenees , on the Ariège river and its tributary Aston . The small town of Ax-les-Thermes is about 16 kilometers (driving distance) in a south-easterly direction; the towns of Foix and Pamiers are 27 and 47 kilometers to the northwest, respectively.

In the 19th century the place had mostly between 450 and 650 inhabitants. In the late 19th and first half of the 20th century, the mechanization of agriculture led to a loss of jobs and, as a result, to a decline in the number of inhabitants, which, however, could be offset by the town's central location.

The inhabitants of Les Cabannes lived less from agriculture than from forestry and from handicrafts and trade. In the late Middle Ages, the gold panning in the Ariège river bed is mentioned; there were also several water mills and sawmills operated with water power.
history
For a long time, Les Cabannes was part of the neighboring town and the castellany of Château-Verdun ; in 1224 it is mentioned as belonging to the Abbey of Saint-Volusien in Foix.
Attractions
- The location of the place at the foot of a 1484 meter high mountain ( Massif du Quié ) is the greatest attraction.
- The parish church of Saint-Martial is an 18th century building; the interior was painted in the 19th century.
