Honorary citizen
According to the official version of the city of Witten, the city no longer has any honorary citizens. In the context of a heated discussion in 1979, during which the claim was made that Adolf Hitler was still an honorary citizen of the city of Witten, the then city director Fritz Schäfer stated: “A prerequisite for the existence of an honorary citizenship is legal capacity, which birth begins and ends with death. The honorary citizenship granted by the city of Witten expired with the death of the entrusted. ”Accordingly, this would also apply to Paul von Hindenburg and Otto von Bismarck, who are wrongly named in various writings as honorary citizens of the city.
