The 2016/17 Metal Ligaen season is the 60th season since the founding of the top division in Danish ice hockey , which has been called Metal Ligaen since 2014 . The main round will take place from September 23, 2016 to February 28, 2017. The same teams will take part as in previous years. Champion was for the second time in series Esbjerg Energy , which could prevail with 4: 1 games against the Gentofte Stars . As in the previous year, third place went to the Frederikshavn White Hawks , who beat the Odense Bulldogs in two games .

In the main round , the 10 clubs complete a triple round with 45 games per club. The 5 worst teams from the previous season have 23 home games, while the best 5 only have 22 home games. The eight best-placed teams qualified for the play-off quarter-finals. In the first two playoff rounds, the teams may choose their playoff opponent in the order of their final placements, whereby the first placed may choose his opponent first. All play-off games from the quarter-finals to the final are played in the best-of-seven mode. There are three points for a win in regular time, two points for a win after overtime or a shootout and one point for a loss after overtime or a shootout.

Playoffs

In the playoffs, the best 8 teams in the main round play against each other in the Best of Seven mode (exception: game for third place). The 4 best teams in the main round choose their opponent for the quarter-finals from the teams in places 5 to 8
, based on their placement. The playoffs begin on March 3, 2017 with the quarter-finals. The beginning of the semi-finals is scheduled for March 21, 2016 and the finals for April 7. If the previous games do not cover the full distance, the semi-finals and the final start at an earlier point in time. The game is played on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.
