Johann Sebastian Bach dies in Leipzig. |
Events
- January 1st : Niccolò Jommelli , who is supposed to take up his position as Maestro coadiutore (Vice Kapellmeister) of the Cappella Giulia at St. Peter's Basilica on this day , lets this date pass and instead goes to Venice, possibly because he is getting a job at the Viennese court hoped for. The Congregazione di Santa Cecilia then wants to cancel the contract, but Pope Benedict XIV is personally committed to Jommelli, who will finally start his ministry on June 14th . His new position is connected with numerous administrative duties and did not fill him as a musician. As far as church service permits, Jommelli continues to write operas for the Roman stages.
- January 12th : The world premiere of the opera Attilio Regolo by Johann Adolph Hasse based on the libretto by Pietro Metastasio takes place at the Hoftheater in Dresden. Domenico Annibali , Angelo Amorevoli , Faustina Bordoni and Regina Mingotti will sing the leading roles. In the same year, the same opera is also performed in Milan.
- January 29th : The world premiere of the opera Il mondo della luna by Baldassare Galuppi based on the libretto by Carlo Goldoni at the Teatro San Moisè takes place in Venice. The work was performed in many other cities in the years that followed.
- March 16 : The dramatic oratorio Theodora by Georg Friedrich Handel based on the libretto by Thomas Morell is premiered in front of practically empty seats at the Theater Royal in Covent Garden. The work will be discontinued after two more performances.
- May 6th : The Intermezzo L'uccellatrice ( The Bird Catcher ) by Niccolò Jommelli is premiered at the Teatro San Samuele in Venice. The author of the libretto is unknown.
- Georg Friedrich Handel completed the semi-opera Alceste based on the play by Tobias Smollett , which, however, was not performed during his lifetime.
