NFC Championship Game
The NFC Championship Game is one of the two semifinals of the National Football League (NFL). Participating teams are the winners of the Divisional Play-offs of the National Football Conference (NFC). The winner receives the George Halas Trophy and competes against the winner of the AFC Championship Game at the Super Bowl .
The reigning champions of the NFC are the San Francisco 49ers ( 2019 season ), who defeated the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game with 37:20. So they met the champions of the AFC , the Kansas City Chiefs, in Super Bowl LIV .
Until 1970 the NFC Championship Game was called the NFL Championship Game . AFL and NFL went their separate ways until this year and played their championships separately. It was only with the merger of the AFL and NFL (with simultaneous renaming to AFC and NFC) that the game became the NFC Championship Game.
