geography

The municipality of Steinbrunn-le-Bas is located in Sundgau , about ten kilometers south of Mulhouse .

history

Traces of settlement can be traced back to the Neolithic Age in the municipality. The remains of a Roman villa from the period between the 8th and 10th centuries were found on the large ram , 336 meters above sea level .

Niedersteinbrunn was first mentioned in the 9th century. Like the surrounding towns, the village belonged to the rule of Landser , who was subordinate to the von Steinbrunn family from the 12th to the 14th centuries. After the family died out, Niedersteinbrunn first fell to the Lords of Häsingen , later to the Truchsess von Wolhausen and finally, after 1694, to the Reinach von Obersteinbrunn family.

Two mills were operated in the municipality until the 19th century: the Schleiffmühle to the south of the town center and the Kaegymühle to the east .

Attractions

The church of St. Leodegar ( Saint-Léger ) was originally one of two churches in the village. The two parishes were united after 1545, but the church buildings continued to exist. The Laurentius Church was closed in 1756 because of dilapidation and later demolished, the Church of St. Leodegar was renewed and enlarged in 1773. It houses a Pietà in a wall niche from 1520 as well as the statues of Saints Blaise and Nicholas. The crucified Christ above the door to the sacristy dates from 1630.
