The municipality consists of the town of Geertruidenberg and the villages of Raamsdonk and Raamsdonksveer, where the municipal administration is located.

Location and economy

The municipality is located in the north-west of the province, between the Biesbosch and Oosterhout , north of the A59 motorway and west of the Utrecht - Breda ( A27 ) motorway . From this motorway the exit leads to Raamsdonksveer and Waalwijk, 12 km to the east . Geertruidenberg lies on the Amer River (see Oosterhout) and has an inland port. There are two large power plants in the municipality, the 380 kV line Geertruidenberg – Eindhoven begins here . Because of the location on the water, a diverse industry as well as tourism and agriculture have developed.

history

The Count of Holland granted Geertruidenberg town charter in 1213, when it was the first town in Holland. After the flood disaster of 1421 , it lost its importance. Nevertheless, the area was still a hard-fought border fortress between Holland and Brabant until the end of the Eighty Years War . In 1793 the French revolutionary troops attacked Geertruidenberg and defeated the Swiss regiments in the Dutch service . The area belonged to Holland until 1813 .

The village of Raamsdonk was first mentioned in 1273; it is an elongated village in the Langstraat area, with a tradition of agriculture and leather and shoemaking. Raamsdonksveer was built as a settlement for boatmen and rush and reed workers near a ferry.

Attractions

In Raamsdonksveer, near the motorway, is the Louwman Collection (formerly the Nationaal Automobiel Museum ), one of the largest automobile museums in the Netherlands, which is only open in spring and summer.

In downtown Geertruidenberg is the gothic three-nave St. Gertrudis - Church . The old town hall and several small houses from the 17th and 18th centuries are located on the market square.

Both Geertruidenberg and Raamsdonksveer have a small marina.

The Biesbosch nature reserve is not far away.
