history
The origin of the place is based on the foundation of a church and the missionary work of this region, which started from St. Denis , Paris . The oldest known document relating to Recke comes from the year 1137. Apparently the Recker church was subordinate to the diocese of Münster at that time, as various goods were transferred to the Varlar monastery in Coesfeld by Bishop Werner von Münster . Among the goods was a domus de Reice cum curte - a house in Recke with a courtyard. In this document, the first Tecklenburg Count Egbert (Egbertus) appears as a witness , who presumably already had influence on the Recker area at that time.
Another evidence is a deed of donation from January 19, 1189 stored in the Diocese of Osnabrück . The deed shows that the nobleman Wiebold von Horstmar as landlord of Recke (rike) took over the main courtyard and the church, as well as other courtyards in the community area and a mill Bishop of Osnabrück donated to the establishment of a men's monastery. However, the possessions were not sufficient for a monastery to be founded, so the property remained with the noblemen of Horstmar until 1200. It was only at this point in time that a document was finally transferred to the Bishop of Osnabrück, a brother of the ruling Count Otto I. von Tecklenburg. In 1243 Recke was first mentioned as a parish and belonged to the Diocese of Osnabrück. It is assumed, however, that an independent church existed earlier, because a plebanus (pastor) Johannes in Recke was first mentioned in 1281 .
The influence of the Tecklenburger counts increased steadily and already in the middle of the 13th century the Lords of Cappeln, as feudal people of the Counts of Tecklenburg, exercised jurisdiction in Recke. In 1326, Count Otto IV of Tecklenburg received the Recke office, which was then completely transferred to the county of Tecklenburg. Due to inheritance disputes, the county of Tecklenburg was divided. Recke came from 1515 with the union of the upper and lower counties in the county of Lingen , which was still owned by the counts of Tecklenburg. The last time Count Nikolaus IV von Tecklenburg was able to unite both areas for a short time in 1541.
From 1548, with the final separation of the county of Lingen from Tecklenburg, a time of political, warlike and denominational unrest and hardship began for Recke. Hardly any other area in Europe changed hands as often as Oberlingen, although with the Peace of Westphalia of 1648 it was given to the Dutch royal house of the Orange . Despite various efforts at the Reichstag by the Counts of Tecklenburg, they did not succeed in regaining the County of Lingen. In 1702 the Upper County and thus Recke fell to Prussia , under whose administration the municipality remained with a short interruption from 1807 to 1813 ( Grand Duchy of Berg ). With the founding of the Tecklenburg district in 1816, Recke finally became part of the Tecklenburger Land again.
Recke is also known as Töddengemeinde . The Tödden were traveling merchants and peddlers who developed from Holland-goers after the Thirty Years' War , with the heyday in the 18th century, and who initially offered their goods in the Netherlands, then also in the Nordic and Baltic countries. The tödden trade brought some prosperity to the home communities, which the tödden houses with their often elaborately designed gables still attest today. The normal Dutchmen are to be distinguished from the Tödden, who hired themselves out in large numbers in the Netherlands as grass mowers, peat cutters and farm workers. The high point of the Holland tour was in the second half of the 18th century. As the local researcher Louis Stüve (1858–1935) reports, between 1760 and 1770 around 50 to 70 men moved from Recke to Holland every spring to work.

coat of arms
Blazon : The coat of arms shows seven blue bars in a silver shield, on top of which a black, silver jointed tower with a gable roof. The tower shows three round-arched, silver windows, including a silver, rectangular loopholes and below a silver, ogival gate. The blue bars correspond to the shield of the noblemen of Horstmar, who had possessions in Recke since the early Middle Ages. The old defense tower of the Romanesque church was added to the Horstmar coat of arms as a symbol of the community.
Town twinning
Recke's partner municipality is Ommen in the Netherlands . The partnership is maintained with a partnership day, which is celebrated every two years, alternating once in Recke and then again in Ommen. Mutual visits by groups from both communities take place throughout the year. The partnership was concluded on September 12, 1989 by the then mayors Herbert Peuten (Recke) and Hendrik Carel Knoppers (Ommen), who signed the certificate in Recke.
Culture and sights
Buildings and museums
The "three Dionysius churches" in Recke are particularly worth seeing. The most historically significant of these is the Evangelical Church. The small late Romanesque hall church from the 9th century in the middle of the village is the oldest building in the community and is a listed building . The "second Dionysius Church" is the former Catholic parish church on Hopstener Strasse. Today it is used by the parish as a youth home. The third church in this group is the parish church of St. Dionysius, which was built between 1953 and 1955 . The baroque high altar from 1755, created by Johann Heinrich König and taken over from the old church, is particularly significant in this modern building . The Steinbeck parish church of St. Philippus and Jacobus , built in the neo-Gothic style from 1889 to 1892, is also a listed building. It contains numerous works by Joseph Krautwald .
A local history museum is housed in the Alte Ruthemühle, which shows various old crafts. Furthermore, on certain days of the year bread and cakes are sold in a bakery, baked in a wood-fired stone oven. In addition, the Ruthemühle also has a registry office room, so it has become a popular location for wedding ceremonies.
Parks
Recke has a public park that is located on the main road and was built around 1977.
Youth work
The VCP (Association of Christian Scouts and Scouts eV) Recke, tribe Asgard has been based in the Adolf-Schlatter-Heim since 1973. Although there are currently no active scouts based in Recke and therefore no more camps and trips take place.
The Recker Catholic young community is an association specializing in child and youth work with around 150 members aged between nine and 27 years. These are mostly divided into groups in which they meet weekly and cook, bake or play together. Furthermore, holiday camps, trips to the ice rink or to an amusement park and special campaigns in cooperation with the parish or other youth associations are offered every year.
The CAJ Steinbeck tries to organize the leisure time of the young people. For example, DVD evenings are organized. In addition, it organizes a large Easter bonfire every year , three holiday camps for children and young people between the ages of eight and 16 and a collection of old clothes for the needy.
As a youth association, the Altar Servant Youth Recke (MJR) offers not only classic altar service work in the Catholic parish of St. Dionysius Recke but also group lessons and activities such as visits to the amusement park and overnight activities for all Catholic children from their first communion.
The Protestant Youth Recke is a relaxed community of young people and young adults who, under the direction of the respective full-time youth officer of the region, take care of child and youth work in the Recke region. This also includes events such as a children's and youth holiday camp, holiday fun in the Adolf-Schlatter-Heim or the annual "Konficup", as well as the children's Bible days.
The Catholic rural youth movement in Recke is one of the youth associations in the community. It organizes different actions every year. The traditional event in the year is the Christmas tree campaign, during which the disused Christmas trees are collected with tractors. Furthermore, the KLJB Recke organizes a “tractor trek” and creates the annual harvest crown for Thanksgiving. In addition, rides are offered and parties are held. The age of the active rural youth members is limited to between 16 and 30 years of age.
Sports
The Turn- und Sportverein (TuS) Recke can look back on a long history. It was founded in 1927 and today has almost 2500 members. Some well-known talents emerged from the youth work, for example the former Bundesliga professional Walter Schmidt (Eintracht Braunschweig) and the Bundesliga professional Simon Rolfes from the youth football department of TuS.
The second sports club is Grün-Weiß Steinbeck, founded in 1930. It looks back on a successful past, the GWS soccer team is in second place in the “all-time table” of the district league A. The club is also known for its youth department. A prime example of this is the women's soccer world champion Kerstin Garefrekes , who grew up in Steinbeck and learned to play soccer at GWS. The GWS also has a large athletics department that organizes major events every year such as the Steinbeck Easter Run or the Steinbeck Triathlon, which has also hosted the German Bundesliga several times.
In 1952 the local group Recke of the DLRG was founded, which today has over 500 members. She is responsible for the security service at the Recke outdoor swimming pool and at the Mittelland Canal, and she is responsible for civil protection for the community. In addition, the DLRG Recke does preventive work, for example DLRG in kindergarten , gives swimming and lifeguarding lessons and trains first aid .
Swimming pools
The Recke-Steinbeck forest outdoor pool is a natural outdoor pool. It has a water surface of over 10,000 m² and a large lawn for sunbathing. Open-air events take place regularly, such as B. the family day with Juxboot regatta, the DLRG holiday fun or the summer night party with the mobile disco Walky-Talky. The forest swimming pool has its own separate children's pool with a slide and a sand landscape for children. There is a pedal boat rental, a water trampoline, a surfboard rental, beach volleyball and outdoor table tennis in the swimming pool and on the premises.
carnival
Recke is a stronghold of the carnival . Every year there are two carnival parades in the community. The prelude to the Rose Sunday , the day before Ash Monday , the Oberstein Becker Carnival Society (OCV) with its move to Obersteinbeck which attracts now more than 10,000 spectators. The carnival highlight of the year, however, is the one established by the Recker Karnevalsgesellschaft 1985 e. V. (RKG) organized the Carnival Monday procession with up to 25,000 spectators lining the streets. The Recker Carnival was significantly advanced by Felix Büscher, who headed the Recker Carnival for over 20 years. It is thanks to him, among other things, that both the foolish GALA meeting taking place in the assembly hall of the Fürstenberg School and the large tented events around Rose Monday became known far beyond the borders of the municipality of Recke.
Political Ash Wednesday
Since 2002 the foolish session in Recke has ended with a Political Ash Wednesday of the CDU - meanwhile the largest event of its kind in Germany after Passau . Previous keynote speakers were Friedrich Merz (2002), Horst Seehofer (2003), Wolfgang Schäuble (2004), Jürgen Rüttgers (2005/2010), Oliver Wittke (2006), Roland Koch (2007), Edmund Stoiber (2009), Norbert Röttgen (2011), David McAllister (2012), Armin Laschet (2013) and Hermann Gröhe (2014) according to Recke. Another regular speaker is Karl-Josef Laumann from nearby Riesenbeck . In 2008 there was a “political trio” instead of a main speaker: Philipp Missfelder and Peter Paziorek spoke alongside Laumann . In 2009 the former Bavarian Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber was the main speaker, in 2011 the Federal Environment Minister Dr. Norbert Röttgen. After 2005, Jürgen Rüttgers, this time as Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, was once again a guest in the community of Recke on the political Ash Wednesday 2010.

She currently has museum trains and freight trains; a perspective for a modern regional train is under discussion. In the local traffic plan SPNV Westfalen-Lippe, the recommissioning of a modern regional train from Osnabrück to Recke every 30 minutes is planned due to its good economy. The existing Recke train station as well as the Recke-Espel train stop can be provided as a train stop.

In addition to the commuters, 1,988 Recker citizens are also employed locally, which results in a total of 3,996 social security employees. The closure of the DMK ice cream factory and the dismantling process at the Ibbenbüren mine have not yet found a decline in the figures and will only be noticeable in the coming surveys.
