Vorau with 4701 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) is a market town in Styria ( Austria ). Since January 1, 2015, it has been merged with the communities of Puchegg , Riegersberg , Schachen bei Vorau and Vornholz as part of the Styrian community structural reform , the new community continues the name "Vorau". Vorau is known for the Augustinian Canons of Vorau with its library, which is famous for its old manuscripts.

The community is located in the judicial district of Fürstenfeld and in the political district of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld .

The municipality includes the following six localities or cadastral municipalities of the same name (residents as of January 1, 2020, area 2015):

• Puchegg (539 Ew .; 1,371.95 ha) with In der Linden R, In der Vorauleiten, Lindenviertel, Steinhöfviertel and Wutzlviertel
• Reinberg (220 Ew .; 743.09 ha) with Beigütl, Bühl, Goldsberg, Haidbauer, Kottingdorf, Lafnitzmühle, Lehen, Mayerhof, Pferschy, Tamp and Winkl
• Riegersbach (737 Ew .; 1,730.26 ha) with field farmers, Forster, Karl auf der Halt, Kernbauer, Moihof, Pichl, Reifbach, Stiftingbauern, Theißl, Waldbach and Weißenbach
• Schachen near Vorau (1191 Ew.); KG Schachen (1,917.37 ha) with Einöd, Greilberg, Hofstätten, In der Höll, Lembach, Oberes Sandviertel, Rechberg, Schachenwiese and Unteres Sandviertel
• Vorau (1327 Ew .; 477.44 ha) with Auf der Kring and the Augustiner Canon Monastery

history

Vorau was first mentioned in a document as early as 1149. In 1163 the Vorau Abbey was founded by Margrave Ottokar III. which is crucial for the further development of the place.

Economy and Infrastructure

In Vorau there is a primary school, a new middle school and a technical college for agriculture and the food industry (in cooperation with St. Martin).

The Marienkrankenhaus Vorau is important for the region as an employer, but also for medical care . Two general practitioners, a dentist and the Augustinus pharmacy in the village also contribute to the medical care.

Tourism association

Together with Fischbach, Miesenbach, Ratten, Rettenegg, Strallegg, St. Kathrein am Hauenstein, St. Jakob im Walde, Waldbach-Mönichwald, Wenigzell and Birkfeld, the municipality forms the “ Joglland - Waldheimat ” tourism association . Its seat is in St. Jakob im Walde.

Bernhard Spitzer (ÖVP), who was mayor of the Vorau market town until December 31, 2014 and headed the merged community as government commissioner from January 1, 2015 , was elected mayor of the large community without a dissenting vote at the constituent meeting of the town council on April 16, 2015 and sworn in by the deputy district captain, deputy district captain Beatrix Pfeifer.

The community board also includes the first vice mayor Patriz Rechberger (ÖVP, Schachen), the second vice mayor Anton Kogler (FPÖ, Schachen), the community treasurer Erich Kager (ÖVP, Riegersbach) and board member Alois Schwengerer (ÖVP, Vornholz). This means that all former parishes are also represented on the parish council.

The municipality council was expanded from 15 to 25 members through the municipality merger. According to the result of the 2015 municipal council election , it is composed as follows:

Due to the amalgamation of the municipalities, the coat of arms lost its official validity on January 1st, 2015. The re-award took effect on April 10, 2016.
The blazon reads:

“In a blue shield in the base of the shield there is a black grooved silver battlement wall, surmounted by an octagonal four-storey silver tower with a red canopy and a gold knob; the tower is lined with a golden lily, the wall covered with a golden lily. "
