history

Until the church is planted

The village was mentioned for the first time under the abbot Rhabanus Maurus von Fulda , who carried out an exchange of goods with the count Boppo von Henneberg on July 9, 839 , with county goods in Remlingen being transferred to the abbot. The royal certificate of confirmation was issued on July 7th, 839 by King Ludwig the Pious . Remlingen was also an important market town in the Middle Ages . Remlingen was also a post office on the old trade route Prague  - Nuremberg  - Frankfurt am Main  - Brussels , today largely identical to federal road 8 .

The ensemble encompasses the place roughly within its late medieval fortification line. Growing out of a Carolingian-Ottonian royal court on the important west-east road Frankfurt - Würzburg, the place was owned by the Counts of Wertheim during the Middle Ages ; since the late 16th and early 17th century it was divided between the Grafschaft Castell and the Hochstift Würzburg ; this division can still be seen today in the two manorial castles on the site. The ruling courts were divided in the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1803 as well as in the mediatization between Bavaria, Baden and the Grand Duchy of Würzburg , until 1810 the whole of Remlingen became part of the Grand Duchy, with which it fell to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1814 . In 1818 the political municipality was established.

place

The purely rural place has a hillside location. In the valley low by the brook, the once regular four-wing complex of the former Würzburg official castle in Remlingen is located , which only has a fragmentary effect in today's building stock.

The highest point is the former Remlingen Castle of the Counts of Castell- Remlingen , built over a high retaining wall . On the northern edge of the village, Count Heinrich zu Castell had a new palace built as a widow's residence for his wife Elisabeth von Helfenstein from 1562. Since the end of the 16th century the castle was the headquarters of the Remlingen line of the count's family. The approximately rectangular, fenced-in complex is dominated by the white building, dated 1565, and the smaller red building, completed in 1578 - simple plastered buildings standing on a slope with three-storey courtyard facades and high hipped gable roofs. In 1683 they were connected by a massive brick corridor.

The parish church with the surrounding churchyard, also situated high up on the slope, forms its own self-contained area. The town's ground plan is irregular and is only borne at the edge by the long-distance paths that cross here: the West-Ost-Straße forms a bend around the Würzburg Official Palace (Marktheidenfelder and Würzburger Straße) at the valley crossing; the north-south street leads from the former upper gate along the retaining wall of the Castell'schen Castle to the market square; it then connects to Würzburger Strasse, from which it only separates outside of the village in the direction of Holzkirchen. The place had three gates, none of which is any more. The main part of the village developed, facing away from the long-distance roads, along irregular alleys to the east (Untere, Lange and Hintere Gasse); it has its center in the small, steeply rising market square dominated by the baroque town hall building. The streets are all lined with farms, each of which faces the street with its residential building in the gable position. Today, mostly plastered half-timbered houses from the 18th century. The frequently occurring year 1710 suggests a reconstruction after a local fire. The place is characterized by the relatively high number of historic houses.

The Höhberg, located on the Remlingen district, is one of the oldest vineyards in Franconia , first mentioned in a document in 839.

Remlingen was and is known for its three R: cattle , horses and beetroot . Remlinger cattle were exported all over the world, including Canada , South Africa and France . Until recently there was a beet breeding association whose beet variety Remling was very popular. The equestrian sport is actively and successfully operated by the local Riding and Driving Club. Every two years at Whitsun, a nationally known horse show takes place on the club's premises.

The male beet grower was also popularly known as “Remmler”. From the heyday of beet cultivation, an almost bizarre inscription remains on the gable of a house that is visible from the B 8 : “Remlinger Runkelrüben-Zuchtverein”.
